Position Details

POSITION SUMMARY:

Mentor Teacher - Teacher Induction Coach provides support for the implementation of Portland Public School’s instructional vision and strategic plan. Through articulation, implementation and understanding of our Office of Teaching and Learning’s instructional and professional learning frameworks, the Teacher Induction Coach supports new teachers across the district. The Mentor Teacher - Teacher Induction Coach uses adopted curricular resources, provides coaching in planning, coordination, and implementation of the guaranteed and viable curriculum to new teachers across the district. This position provides direct support to new teachers through planning, modeling, co-teaching, training, and data analysis across a content or program area.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Design and provide support for new educators in:

  • Developing instruction aligned with district and state standards.
  • Designing assessment tasks that allow students to demonstrate understanding in a variety of ways.
  • Using data to give meaningful feedback and modify instruction.

Collaborate:

  • With new teachers, support personnel, administrators, and colleagues to enhance instruction and improve student outcomes.
  • With colleagues in team and building-based meetings and discussions.
  • With colleagues across the district to coordinate new teacher supports and improve student outcomes.

Additional Duties:

  • Model and provide coaching, professional development, and training to new teachers in support implementation of the strategies and approaches described in the instructional framework to improve student outcomes.
  • Support new teachers directly using a coaching model that focuses on co-planning, modeling, co-teaching, and feedback. Implement strategies that include multiple methods of assessment.
  • Contribute to a culture in which self reflection, continuous improvement and a focus on improving student outcomes is acknowledged as critical work for all staff.
  • New Teachers feel comfortable in reaching out for support in their improvement efforts.
  • Coach new teacher in reviewing, interpreting and reporting on a variety of assessment tools and measurements; apply data to assist professional educators to build capacity for instructional improvement related to content-specific goals for equity and excellence; provide coaching in data-driven decision making through the implementation with new teachers.
  • Understand how adult and K-12 learners grow and develop, recognizing variations within and across cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional and physical areas, diversity of cultures and communities; develop, implement and insure systems to effect appropriate, challenging learning environments.
  • Coach new teachers based on content standards, learning objectives and goals for assigned programs; monitor progress and effectiveness of classroom instruction;coach and model strategies to maximize effectiveness.
  • Promote a culture of high expectations, providing program support directed at every student receiving high quality and culturally relevant instruction; support and implement the District’s Racial Equity Policy that reflects and supports the racial and ethnic diversity of the student population and community.
  • Assists in implementing school, and district curriculum, instruction, and assessment policy and procedures.
  • Develops new educators’ knowledge, skills, and dispositions to improve student outcomes through planning and facilitating: professional learning, data driven observation and feedback cycles, instructional coaching, and blended learning.
  • Models instructional strategies for language development across multiple content areas. Bridges learning experiences between preservice educators and new educators, through workshop learning experiences.
  • Supports the implementation of high-leverage instructional strategies through Equity centered coaching and mentoring.
  • Provides support for teachers and administrators to use instructional practices and resources.
  • Supports effective and culturally responsive instructional and SEL strategy implementation.
  • Collaborates with colleagues for integrated curriculum delivery.
  • Facilitates racially diverse, school-representative teacher teams, engaging multiple perspectives to plan ongoing professional development support.
  • Provides coaching in data-driven decision-making through the implementation of Professional Learning Communities.
  • Embraces innovation and systems thinking.
  • Continues to develop skills and capacity in professional growth.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated understanding of adult learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and write staff development materials.
  • Demonstrated leadership in school and/or district professional learning for culturally relevant practice and cultural competency.
  • Evidence of closing racial opportunity gaps for students.
  • Ability to model sheltered instructional strategies.
  • Knowledgeable in proficiency-based grading and assessment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in education.
  • Bilingual.
  • Evidence of working successfully with all groups of students, including students of different races, emerging bilingual students, and special education students.
  • Experience or expertise in leading racial equity work.
  • Experience in blended learning tools and strategies for student and adult learning. 6. Recent successful public school teaching with students from various social, economic, and racial backgrounds.
  • Experience leading professional development.
  • Experience with coaching educators to improve instructional practice.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

Incumbents must be properly licensed by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission for assignment as a Professional Educator - Teacher. For positions identified within core academic areas, incumbents must be endorsed in the subject matter area by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) to teach the designated subjects.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some positions in this classification may require the use of a personal automobile and possession of a valid Class C Oregon driver’s license.
  • Some positions in this classification may require bilingual/bi-literate skills in a language other than English.
  • Work hours may include evening and weekend activities, meetings, trainings, workshops and in-services.

  • Assign and grade class work, homework, projects, tests and assignments.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Prepare classroom for class activities.
  • Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies.
  • Provide appropriate feedback on work.
  • Encourage parent and community involvement.
  • Provide student information to authorized individuals in a timely manner.
  • Participate in appropriate professional growth and extracurricular activities.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
  • Utilize relevant technologies to support and differentiate instruction.
  • Welcome and empower students and families, including underrepresented families of color and those whose first language may not be English, as essential partners in student education.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.
  • Update records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations.
  • Prepare required reports on students and activities.
  • Participate in department, school, district and parent meetings.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and caregivers regarding student progress and student needs.
  • Observe and evaluate student's performance and development.
  • Support the effective implementation of Common Core aligned instruction.

ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENT: Full, unrestricted teaching license issued by TSPC.

COMPENSATION: $55,539 TO $108,071 (Annual salary based on 1.0 FTE)

WORK YEAR: 193 days

Portland Public Schools is a public employer and participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP). Eligible employees are required by statute to contribute 6% of salary on a pre-tax basis to OPSRP/IAP, after serving six months under a PERS employer.
