The Special Education Department is committed to providing instructional services in inclusive environments that will prepare students that receive special education services for life and careers.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Therapeutic Intervention Coach works with students who have educational and emotional challenges from grade K through 12. The position is responsible for providing individual and small group behavior intervention and supporting reading skill building. Must be able to collect and chart behavioral and academic data and provide support to teachers regarding student management issues, behavioral problems and academic tracking.


DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works closely with the Student Management Specialist and Special Education teachers to support therapeutic and academic interventions to better meet students' needs.
  • Staffs and maintains de-escalation room.
  • Possess knowledge and demonstrate competency in utilization of therapeutic approach in the de-escalation continuum (escalation, de-escalation, establish therapeutic rapport).
  • Problem solves to teach alternative behavior.
  • Assists in the re-integration of student into educational setting.
  • Assists in developing programs and/or activities to promote positive student behavior, as well as intervention strategies.
  • Works with referred students and their teacher for the purpose of modifying inappropriate behavior.
  • Works with referred students and their teacher for the purpose of building literacy skills.
  • Works with and assists school staff and parents in developing student therapeutic and academic interventions.
  • Collects and reviews data related to school behavior plans and reading progress.
  • Responsible for all behavior data and summarizes for building administrator.
  • Responsible for creating, implementing and monitoring individual contracts and safety plans in collaboration with the Student Management Specialist, Assistant Principal, Counselor and Special Education personnel.
  • Facilitate lunch social group for students (to learn pro-social cafeteria behavior).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to interact with difficult students in a positive manner.
  • Ability to collect and summarize data clearly and concisely in written form.
  • Ability to work with therapist and teacher to form interventions based on behavioral data.
  • Ability to remain professional and not personalize threatening behavior by students (verbal and physical).
  • Ability to complete CPI training, and carry out CPI therapeutic interventions, obtain first aid card and type

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) years, full time, college coursework to meet the ESSA requirements (official transcripts must be provided prior to hire). -OR- Completion of the Para Professional exam with passing score upon recommendation for hire. Or, a combination of at least three years work, education, training or experience in a special school or similar mental health program; and has the competency necessary to contribute empathetic insight individually and as a member of a collaborative team. Bachelor's degree in any of the above preferred.
  • Training or experience in therapeutic intervention preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience and competence in working successfully as a team member with professional staff; excellent organizational skills, as well as oral and written communication skills.
  • Vehicle (van) training.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires the ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 100 lbs. May also require the ability to restrain 50 to 100 lbs and requires continuous reaching, bending, crouching, twisting, kneeling and the repetitive use of arms, hands, wrists and legs.

Hourly Rate: $24.35 - $30.80

Work Year: 192

FTE: 0.938 (37.5 hours per week)
