Ports America Shared Services, Inc is Hiring a Commercial Operations Manager - Business Development Near Baltimore, MD

Description

At Ports America, the Commercial Operations Manager provides leadership and direction to the Port, Shipping Customers, and terminal staff in the planning for the overall cargo handling operation. The incumbent will direct and supervise the commercial operations work, ensuring an efficient, safe, and productive operation.

Essential Duties:

  • Lead value added efforts delivering to current and potential clients.
  • Manage relationships with MPA as well as Beneficial Cargo Owners within the assigned region.
  • Provide operating direction for the terminal and its management team members.
  • Develop and maintain professional customer and port relations by identifying and exceeding customer needs.
  • Ensure that staff and labor demonstrate high value customer service principles.
  • Partner with operations and engineering teams to drive short- and long-term business plans designed to achieve company goals and objectives.
  • Develop and operate within approved fiscal budget limits, ensuring targeted P&L results.
  • Is an advocate of working effectively as a team with each other and with other Ports America staff. Ensure effective and regular communication and high employee morale.
  • Promote communication for current operations and customer relationship statuses through regular communication and by issuing periodic reports.
  • Develop, communicate, and maintain operating and administrative procedures (consistent with area procedures and objectives) designed to provide required information and facilitate internal practices.
  • Ensure that all policies, procedures, and controls are followed and that required reports are completed accurately, submitted on time to appropriate staff members, customers and other designated personnel, and that appropriate staff and labor have a full understanding of these procedures.
  • Drive and develop commercial sales and marketing goals by leading local sales activities through new business development and long-term customer contracts.
  • Partner with operations to drive high levels of productivity and efficiency by assessing operational practices and procedures in line with commercial needs.
  • Complete other tasks and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA degree in Marine Administration, Transportation, Operations Management, Engineering, or related discipline
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • 5 years of progressive management experience.
  • Expertise in terminal operations, planning, and stevedore operations.
  • Experience with computerized operating systems.
  • Experience with related union contracts and managing labor.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations, and related industry governmental regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of managerial and leadership principles, with the ability to influence other management team members and lead a department of technically proficient individuals.
  • Familiarity with all aspects of the systems support for the terminal, including software applications, equipment, and workflow.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety, health, and environmental issues as they affect the workplace, including local regulations, national requirements, and governmental agency requirements.
  • Working knowledge of budget preparation and financial applications.
  • The ability to exercise sound business judgment to set direction and establish priorities.
  • Capable of executing exceptional time management, due to fast-moving, demanding work environment
  • The ability to exercise discretion and good judgment, with an ability to understand the effect of decisions within the operation.

Physical Working Attributes:

  • Climb up and down a latter on a vessel when needed.
  • Work in changing weather conditions
  • Work in an environment with moving objects and machinery
