Job DescriptionPOSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR OF Elementary SCHOOL LEADERSHIP
REPORTS TO: CHIEF OF SCHOOLS
OVER-TIME STATUS: EXEMPT PAY GRADE: 158
JOB SUMMARY:Effectively communicate and uphold the missions, goals, and objectives of the Portsmouth Public Schools to both elementary and secondary school communities. Provide dynamic leadership to principals, assistant principals, and administrators across all educational levels. Oversee the day-to-day operations of elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as alternative educational institutions, ensuring alignment with district-wide objectives and fostering a culture of excellence and innovation. This position reports to the Chief Schools Officer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
  • Formulate, interpret, and implement policies and regulations governing comprehensive educational functioning across all levels.
  • Ensure adherence to Virginia Standards of Learning, fostering academic excellence and student achievement.
  • Strategically allocate staffing resources and teaching positions in accordance with established guidelines and educational needs.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of professional development initiatives for administrative staff at all educational levels.
  • Supervise the creation and implementation of operational documents, ensuring efficient administrative processes.
  • Investigate and respond to inquiries, concerns, and complaints from the school community, providing timely and effective resolutions.
  • Facilitate and oversee regular staff and principal meetings to foster collaboration and alignment with district objectives.
  • Guarantee the availability of essential supplies, equipment, and educational materials across all schools.
  • Ensure schools' compliance with local policies, state regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Direct the operations of School Leadership, overseeing areas such as discipline, parent concerns, and student activities.
  • Spearhead special projects assigned by the Superintendent and School Board, providing strategic leadership and guidance.
  • Assist in the implementation and evaluation of employee performance appraisal systems.
  • Provide mentorship and training to incoming administrators, facilitating their professional development and success.
  • Foster effective communication and collaboration among schools, departments, and external entities within the educational community.
  • Conduct screening, interviews, and recommendations for vacant positions, ensuring a qualified and diverse workforce.
  • Approve leave requests for school staff and administrators, managing professional leave budgets effectively.
  • Monitor travel expenses and leave allocations for administrative staff, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary to support the smooth operation and continuous improvement of the educational institution.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Comprehensive knowledge of school administration principles, practices, and procedures. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders to achieve common goals. Strong leadership and organizational abilities. Capacity to initiate, monitor, and evaluate programs effectively. Proficiency in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships within the educational community.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Ability to effectively communicate and interact with others. Frequent sitting, walking, bending, grasping, fingering, and reaching. Occasional standing and stooping. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential tasks. Possession of a valid driver's license. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Required: Master's Degree in School Administration with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in education, including a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a school principal at both elementary and secondary levels.
