Position Title: STEAM Fishing Instructor (Ag Summer Camp & After School)Terms: Part-time grant-funded position, expiring September 2025Position Summary:We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Fishing Instructor to join our Agriculture Summer Camp and Afterschool Program team. The ideal candidate will have a deep love for fishing and the outdoors, coupled with a strong background in teaching and safety. This role involves instructing children and teenagers in the art and science of fishing, fostering an appreciation for nature, and promoting environmental stewardship.Key ResponsibilitiesInstruction:Develop and implement engaging fishing lessons and activities for various age groups.Teach fundamental fishing skills, including casting, knot tying, baiting, and fish identification.Educate participants on fishing ethics, conservation practices, and local ecosystems.Safety and Supervision:Ensure the safety of all participants during fishing activities.Enforce safety guidelines and procedures.Monitor and manage behavior to maintain a positive and inclusive environment.Program Development:Assist in the development of a comprehensive fishing curriculum that aligns with the camp's goals and objectives.Organize and prepare necessary equipment and materials for daily activities.Evaluate and assess participant progress and provide constructive feedback.Collaboration:Work closely with other camp staff to coordinate activities and ensure a cohesive program.Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding participant progress and any concerns.QualificationsEducation:Bachelor's degree in Education, Outdoor Education, Environmental Science, or a related field.Valid RIDE teaching certification.Certifications and Experience:Relevant outdoor certification (e.g., Wilderness First Aid, CPR, Lifeguard, or similar).Extensive knowledge and experience in fishing techniques and safety practices.Previous experience working with children in a teaching or camp setting.Skills:Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Strong leadership and organizational abilities.Ability to inspire and motivate young people.Patience, creativity, and a passion for the outdoors.HOURS:* Summer camp would be 20 hours with 4 hours of prep for each camp week.* After-school program in the Fall would be 2 days a week for 4 hours 4 hours to prep materials.* Hourly: $40 per hourHow to Apply:Interested candidates should submit their resume, a cover letter detailing their relevant experience and passion for fishing and teaching, and a copy of their certifications on SchoolSpring.comWork Schedule:This is a part-time position involving one day per month for in-class instruction, with additional hours for preparation, collaboration, and resource development.Portsmouth School Department is an equal-opportunity employer and encourages candidates of all backgrounds to apply.
