Job Description

Job Description

The Senior Accountant prepares financial reports for several clients, to track client assets, liabilities, change in net assets, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities. Also, the Senior Accountant performs and manages the payroll functions of the company, ensuring pay is processed on time, accurately, and in compliance with government regulations. In addition to these duties, the Senior Accountant will lead the implementation of new accounting software and electronic practices.
The S enior Accountant has strong technical skills that allow for close collaboration within the accounting team and client-partners to ensure financial systems are efficient, accurate, and compliant with regulatory standards.
Compensation: $100,000 - $110,000 bonuses
Location: Reston, VA (on -site)
Schedule: Monday – Friday, Standard Hours
Senior Accountant  Duties and Responsibilities:
Accounting Management

  • Leads the implementation of accounting software and electronic practices as well as updates as needed to streamline processes and improve efficiency.
  • Conducts periodic financial analysis to identify variances and trends and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Trains accounting staff on technical accounting issues and new software applications.
  • Stays updated on industry trends and changes in accounting regulations, ensuring compliance and best practices.
  • Collaborates with IT and other departments to integrate financial systems with client-partner specific processes.
  • As appropriate, coordinates with HRIS vendor to maintain HRIS software system; recommends updates to enhance the HRIS software.
  • Performs general accounting and other related duties in the accounting department.
  • Prepares monthly financial statements including Statement of Financial Position, and Statement of Activities.
  • Maintains all general ledger transactions.
  • Codes invoices, sets up new accounts, reconciles accounts, and closes the monthly books.
  • Reconciles bank accounts at least monthly, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks.
  • Reconciles customer accounts and manages accounts receivable collections.
  • Verifies A/P transactions, weekly check run, and responsible for verifying invoices to the appropriate expense accounts.
  • Collaborate closely with external auditors to coordinate the information necessary to perform the annual audit.
  • Files required tax forms with federal, state, and local government agencies.
  • Establish, maintain, and monitor cash control systems for the organization.

Payroll Management

  • Implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing and accounting systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including onboarding, offboarding, 401(k) contributions, deductions, and changes to pay rates.
  • Maintain current information in the 401(k) financial processing site.
  • Submit 401(k) contribution amounts and 401(k) loan repayments to the Processing Center for each payroll.
  • Administration of the HRIS system (BambooHR) functions including, but not limited to, auditing of information for accuracy, reporting, and processing status changes.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Facilitates audits and census responses by providing accurate records and documentation.
  • Identifies and recommends updates to payroll accounting software, systems, and procedures.

Reporting Relationships and Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Reports to the Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer
  • Supervisory responsibilities: N/A

Senior Accountant  Education and Experience:

  • CPA license in addition to a Bachelor's and/or Master’s (preferred) degree in accounting, finance, or related discipline required.
  • At least 5 to 7 years of accounting experience required.

Senior Accountant  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage accounting projects, including software implementations and process improvements.
  • Excellent communication and people skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of electronic accounting systems and financial automation tools.
  • Extensive knowledge of general financial accounting.
  • Understanding of and ability to adhere to GAAP.
  • Highly proficient with accounting and payroll software.
  • Experience with Dynamics SL and BambooHR software preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. (Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including but not limited XLOOKUP, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, pivot tables, and auditing formulas required.)

Senior Accountant  Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Regularly sits at a computer station, repetitively enters transactions up to 7 hours per day.
  • Typically stands, bends, stoops, and crouches while filing documents manually.
  • Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 30 lbs. when moving supplies and records.
  • Regularly move about the office to coordinate work.

Senior Accountant  Salary and Benefits: 
The starting salary for this position depends on the depth and breadth of experience.
