Medical Interpreter

Reports To: Office Manager

Employee Status: Non-Exempt (Regarding Overtime)

Position Summary: Under general supervision, but in line with established PC&HC policies and procedures, provide interpretation services for the Spanish speaking population.

Essential Functions

• Represent PC&HC to the patients in a courteous and professional manner. Provide prompt, efficient and accurate patient service.
• Greet, assist and direct patients appropriately.
• Conduct effective, accurate and impartial interpreting for staff, patients and families across all departments in organization; including, but not limited to, medical, behavioral, dietetics, case management and front office.
• Adheres to generally accepted translator ethics principles.
• Assist Providers with telephone interpreting for telephone messaging regarding, but not limited to, labs/imaging results, etc.
• Assess and monitor patients’ understanding of information conveyed.
• Translate written documents as needed.
• Serve as support and resource person for Patient Services Representatives and interprets as necessary.
• Treat all patient information confidentially and in accordance with established HIPAA regulations.
• Make patient appointments in accordance with PC&HC scheduling guidelines.
• Register patients, obtain and enter all necessary demographic and insurance related information needed as record for registration and billing of Spanish patients’ visits.
• Ensure new and updated documentation is filed in the medical record.
• Assist with Medical Record administration and fax inbox as needed.
• Provide information on account status.
• Improve the patient experience and health care processes and help assure the provision of high quality health care, as well as an ongoing process of performance improvement.
• Maintain a work area that reflects a professional environment at all times.

Marginal Functions

• Assist in the opening and closing security procedures of the building.
• Serve as back-up for Patient Services Representatives when understaffed, including at other PC&HC locations.
• Perform all other duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

Requirements:

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must have a High School diploma or equivalent.
• Must complete and pass a written interpreting exam.
• Proficient in written English and Spanish, including any necessary specialized vocabulary, terminology and phraseology.
• Must possess the knowledge, skills or abilities to translate written content in paper or electronic form.
• Two or more years experience in medical interpretation.
• Must follow all HIPAA and OSHA requirements.
• Must be supportive of our mission in order to provide healthcare to the underinsured and uninsured.
• Must be able to pass a 10-panel drug screen
