Prince George's County Public Schools is Hiring a Lead Bus Driver (Internal Applicants Only) Near Prince, VA

TitleLead Bus Driver (Internal Applicants Only)
Job GoalTo manage a team of drivers in the transport of students safely, efficiently, and economically to and from school daily and to extra-curricular events on a non-regular basis
Qualifications
  • Only Internal applicants will be accepted for Lead Bus Driver roles
  • Internal applicants should meet the following criteria to be considered for a lead driver role:
    • Be in good standing in a current transportation position
    • Be considered leaders and effective role models for other drivers
    • Be an employee viewed as a good ambassador who exhibits the qualities of our PGCPS motto to lead, innovate, and inspire in all that we do as a school division
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency, with the potential for a waiver of this requirement after a successful personal interview with school board personnel.
  • Submit at least three references attesting to the applicant’s ability, character, and personal qualifications, including a former recent supervisor
  • Meet school bus driver certification requirements including a CDL certification:
    • Minimum hours of instruction
    • Satisfactorily pass knowledge examination
  • Meet state requirements for appropriate licensing
  • Submit to random alcohol/drug testing
  • Ability to operate within all vehicle types used in transporting students
  • Ability to operate telephone and radio communication when necessary
Reports To
  • Director of Transportation and/or Transportation Coordinator
  • Each lead driver shall be directly responsible to the principals of the schools he/she serves on matters related to student discipline and patron relations
Performance Responsibilities
  • To conduct/assist pre-trip inspection of school bus for every run
  • To use established routes and designated bus and/or car
  • To assist in the operation of the bus and/or car on approved time schedule
  • To report all accidents and student injuries to authorities
  • To conduct emergency evaluation drills in keeping with division regulations
  • To instruct riders regarding being responsible passengers
  • To work with safety of students as priority
  • To report person absences in time for supervisor to secure substitute aide
  • To perform bus housekeeping duties inside and out
  • To report bus and/or car defects to driver, supervisor, or head of mechanics
  • To establish favorable working relationships with other aides, drivers, maintenance personnel, teachers, students, principals, and total school staff
  • To exhibit positive image as a local representative of the school division
  • To demonstrate knowledge of rules and regulations promulgated by local, state, and federal authorities
  • To demonstrate knowledge of state laws and local ordinances
  • To administer disciplinary procedures in keeping with school board policies and administrative regulations
  • To be alert and exercise good judgement concerning emergencies, disabled vehicles, and irregular special requests by parents of riders
  • Manage a team of drivers as they perform their duties
  • Evaluate and train drivers under their supervision
  • Serve as a substitute driver in the case of driver call outs
  • Provide leadership to the drivers under their supervision
  • Provide the first line of disciplinary action for policy violations committed by subordinates
  • Be an example of an exemplary employee to their subordinates
  • Promote and comply with the mission of the division and its leadership
  • To comply with dress code
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Coordinator of Transportation
  • Possess basic Computer skills and the ability to use Microsoft office suite
  • Ability to learn routing software (Geotab, Versatrans, and other software systems)
Physical RequirementsWork involves limited physical tasks and may involve limited lifting, stooping, and climbing steps.
Terms Of Employment10-month contract with 10 additional days, as determined in collaboration with the Director or Coordinator of Transportation and salary, as determined by work experience and credentials, on the Lead Driver pay scale.
EvaluationPerformance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of theBoard’s policy on Evaluation of Personnel.
