Basic Function : The First Mate reports to the Captain in the efficient transport of freight, fuel, and personnel to and from the hatchery sites and ports located in Prince William Sound.
In the absence of the Captain, the First Mate reports to the Vessel Manager / Captain.
Primary Responsibilities : The primary responsibilities of the position are to work closely with the Captain, maintain the freight vessel in ready status, administration of vessel operations, maintain and log all safety equipment, and supervise vessel crew members while on deck.
As second in command and in the absence of the Captain, the First Mate will assume the Captain's duties.
Description of duties and tasks : Safety The First Mate is responsible for crew safety while on deck and during maintenance operations.
The First Mate is responsible for conducting and maintaining a log for safety drills, and all safety equipment.The First Mate is responsible for maintaining the SDS file.
Delivery Services The First Mate will supervise deck personnel while stowing and unloading cargo, fuel transport or freight delivery vehicles, or passengers.
Vessel Maintenance The First Mate in coordination with the Captain will maintain the vessel and its equipment to comply with the Coast Guard's Certificate of Inspection requirements and participate in Coast Guard inspections as scheduled.
The First Mate develops and maintains a preventative maintenance schedule for the vessel; accurately records improvements;
Administrative The First Mate inventories and develops a needs list for supply planning and ordering, inventory, and equipment for the preventative maintenance schedule or improvements;
the First Mate maintains logs required by USCG for all maintenance performed.
Supervises Crew The First Mate is responsible for on-deck safety, safe loading, and unloading operations and maintenance operations ensuring OSHA standards are met.
