First Mate seaday exempt wage begins at $350/day; dock and boatyard non-exempt wage is $25/hour. The First Mate receives pay of $500/seaday when operating the vessel without the Vessel Manager/Captain. Seadays are paid for days worked on vessel while navigating waters. Boatyard work is paid hourly for hours worked while stationed for dock/harbor/boatyard work.The First Mate is a temporary position on the M/V Alaskan Challenger, delivering freight, supplies, and fuel to off-grid hatcheries in Prince William Sound. The position requires living on the vessel during work rotations, which are four weeks on the vessel and two weeks off. Vessel operations are expected for one week each rotation in the absence of the vessel manager/captain.There will be a continuous seven-week on-vessel work rotation from June 17 to August 01. Duties will be performed in the absence of the vessel manager/captain.

Essential Functions: Work performed on the PWSAC vessel while at sea, in port, shipyard, or hatchery location as duties require. Must be able to move about freely; work outdoors in all weather conditions; ability to lift and carry 50 pounds; ability to climb stairs and ladders; work around water - on docks and floats; ability to climb aboard and about vessels and small aircraft; dexterity to maneuver through tight spaces and good balance on uneven, wet surfaces and in rough water; use radios, compasses, electronic navigational equipment, telephones and computers unimpaired. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Must be able to hear and see to receive verbal and written instructions.
Basic Function: The First Mate reports to the Captain in the efficient transport of freight, fuel, and personnel to and from the hatchery sites and ports located in Prince William Sound. In the absence of the Captain, the First Mate reports to the Vessel Manager/ Captain.
Primary Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the position are to work closely with the Captain, maintain the freight vessel in ready status, administration of vessel operations, maintain and log all safety equipment, and supervise vessel crew members while on deck. As second in command and in the absence of the Captain, the First Mate will assume the Captain's duties.
