Position Title: Mechanical Field Engineer I, II

Work Location: Chesapeake, VA 
FLSA Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Summary of duties – Mechanical Field Engineer I, II applies a general knowledge of HVAC, Piping and Valve systems operation to include engineering design, analysis and evaluation as well as possess the capacity to assist in the development of engineering and technical documentation / reports relative to same. Provides technical trade specific support to the Project Manager in such areas as research, design, development, material identification and procurement support, inventory management, installation, and testing. Exercises discretion and independent judgment of a professional nature to complete engineering tasks and possesses the technical ability to recommend changes and / or refinements for continuous process improvement.

Specific description of duties

  • Supports cost estimate development for HVAC system work, including ductwork fabrication/ installation and chill water systems
  • Proficient with Installation Drawing comprehension and applicable NAVSEA Standard Items
  • Capable of supervising HVAC and Piping System installation in the role of a working lead
  • Assists in the development of Installation Design Packages
  • Identifies problem areas and provides Management with pertinent technical information so Condition Discrepancy Reports, Change Order Request Notices, and/or Liaison Action Request can be drafted
  • Identifies, analyzes, reports on, and corrects causes of equipment and systems failures
  • Assists in the development of test and checkout procedures for systems and equipment
  • Assists in the research and selection of applicable equipment / material
  • Provides technical expertise and support on installation and production
  • Conducts pre and post installation testing
  • Provides training on systems and equipment
  • Conducts configuration audits
  • Overtime is routinely required but not guaranteed
  • Travel outside the local area may be required
  • Possession of a State Drivers License is required
  • Perform any other assignments or tasks as needed or requested by management to assist in accomplishing the organization’s mission, objectives and goals.

 Education / Specialized training –

  • High School diploma or GED mandatory.

Level I:

  • Bachelor’s degree and one year, or Associates degree and 4 years, or 8 years related experience in the removal, installation and or repair of shipboard HVAC / piping systems in accordance with Military Standard procedures. (HS diploma or GED may be required depending on varying contract stipulations)
  • Degree should be in HVAC Engineering, Management, or in a relatable field to include Piping systems, Valves etc.

Level II:

  • Bachelor’s degree and one year, or Associates degree and six years, or 10 years related experience in the removal, installation and or repair of shipboard HVAC systems in accordance with Military Standard procedures. (HS diploma or GED may be required depending on varying contract stipulations)
  • Degree should be in HVAC Engineering, Management, or in a relatable field to include Piping systems, Valves etc.

Security Clearance

  • Clearance up to secret level may be required.

Certification / Licenses (as required for the task being performed)

  • Fire watch certification
  • Driver’s license

Physical/Environmental Job Requirements

Physical requirements for the job may include the following:

  • Lifting/moving up to and including 50 pounds
  • Routinely climbing several flights of stairs
  • Performing tasks in confined spaces

Our work is primarily onboard naval vessels that may include variables of physical activity, i.e. stooping, climbing, walking, etc.

In performing these duties, you may be required to work outdoors. You will experience temperature variations, extremely loud noises and other physical hazards.
