Diagnose and treat problems with patients' teeth, gums, and related parts of the mouth. Provide advice and instruction on taking care of the teeth and gums and on diet choices that affect oral health.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide professional and quality customer service to all patients. Knowledge of HIPAA regulations regarding confidentiality of protected health information.
  • Meet with doctor prior to start of the day to review patients for the day.
  • Greet and seat patient in operatory room.
  • Perform fourhanded dentistry and suction for dentist.
  • Cleans, stock and maintain operatory room including dental chairs, filters, and all other systems to ensure they are prepared and ready to be utilized.
  • Follow proper procedures in the disposal of sharps and hazardous waste and practice "Standard precautions in accordance with CDC and NYSDOH requirements.
  • Take, develop and process x-rays.
  • Pour up alginate impressions, log and track outgoing and incoming lab cases.
  • Schedule patient's appointments if needed in Dentrix system.
  • Post completed procedures in patient’s ledger.
  • Pre-wash and check instruments for sharp and waste before sterilization.
  • Adheres to Infection Control in utilizing the hand washing technique before/after patient contact.
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients by ensuring the enforcement of safety policies; attend continuing education programs/training as scheduled; assist in the proper handling of patients' protected health information to ensure HIPAA compliance.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work area.
  • Provide work coverage at the front desk as needed.
  • Responsible for wearing professional attire to the workplace as well as being properly groomed with hair tied back.
  • Abide by ProHealth Dental procedures and guidelines.
  • Assist to improve care delivery through participation in performance improvement projects; attends and participate in staff meetings, in-services and trainings.
  • Demonstrate understanding and respect for culture sensitivity and religious beliefs, maintaining a professional relationship with patients, visitors and staff at all times.
  • Report any safety incident to the practice manager immediately.
  • Ensure all current consent forms are available for doctor’s review.
  • Check for a signed treatment plan before treatment is started.
  • Inform doctor if treatment being performed is different than original treatment plan or additional treatment is going to be performed.
  • Monitor supplies and equipment and report problems to the practice manager in a timely manner.
  • Inform office manager of problems with computers, fax machines, telephones, etc.
  • Assist and/or cover receptionists when needed with telephones and scheduling patients.
  • Take breaks at appropriate times and for allotted amount of time.
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • General education degree or high school diploma
  • Knowledge of Dentrix and other relevant software applications
  • Understanding of health & safety regulations
  • Knowledge of dental instruments and sterilization methods
  • Understanding of standard practices, procedures and dental terminology

CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS, OR LICENSURE REQUIRED FOR THIS JOB

Dental Assistant Certification is preferred (e.g. DANB - Dental Assisting National Board)
