Position Summary
The Public Health Alliance of Southern California (Public Health Alliance), is seeking a full-time Media Advocacy Specialist to lead the development and implementation of the Public Health Alliance's media and communication strategy, amplify the successes of our initiatives with policymakers, advocates, and in the media, and continue to elevate the use and expansion of our California Healthy Places Index. This new and exciting opportunity calls for a dynamic, equity and justice-focused, creative thinker with experience working with traditional and social media, dissemination, and outreach strategies.

The Public Health Alliance of a Southern California (Public Health Alliance) is a coalition of the executive leadership of ten local health departments in Southern California, whose members have a statutory responsibility for the health of nearly 60% of the state's population. The Public Health Alliance works to mobilize the transformative power of local public health for enduring health equity. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Research, develop, and implement strategic media advocacy and communication plans to showcase the Public Health Alliance's key initiatives and impact on issues such as climate, health and racial justice, birth equity, public health data science, and policy.
  • Develop written content for Alliance newsletters, impact snapshots, website, and other communication platforms.
  • Lead the Alliance's media outreach and public relations efforts through press releases, media advisories, pitches, op-eds, briefs, video, and other strategic communication channels.
  • Develop relationships and serve as the Public Health Alliance's liaison with reporters and media outlets.
  • Monitor the news for media advocacy opportunities to further elevate the Public Health Alliance's goals and objectives.
  • Identify new and emerging thought leadership opportunities for members of the Public Health Alliance staff and members to speak at conferences, in the media, podcasts, and other platforms, about core issues related to our initiatives.
  • Manage the Alliance's email lists, blog, social media and other digital tools and communications platforms.
  • Provide copy-editing, grant writing and reporting support to the Alliance team to strengthen messaging on key initiatives.
  • Represent the Alliance in collaborative communications projects and campaigns with our members and key partners.
  • Travel occasionally throughout the Southern California region and the State of California depending on safety protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience in media, communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, social justice advocacy, and/or a related field.
  • A bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, public health or a related field, or substitute with four additional years of relevant professional experience.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing media and communications strategies for multiple projects and audiences.
  • Commitment to our mission of advancing health equity and racial justice by mobilizing the power of public health.
  • Strategic thinker with ability to craft sharp, powerful content that pops.
  • Strong writing, editing and verbal skills, with the capacity to translate complex ideas and contextual environments into simple and clear messages, calls-to-action, and directives.
  • Excellent storytelling skills (journalism, podcasting, blogging, publishing, writing background).
  • Deep project management experience, with the ability to quickly pivot between projects.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in or with the following groups:
    • Government agencies
    • The public health sector
    • Policy and systems change campaigns within social and racial justice movements
  • Previous experience working in a public health, policy advocacy, or community organizing capacity and working with communities of color.
  • Solutions-oriented with an ability to be flexible and work with competing demands.
COMPENSATION & OTHER POSITION DETAILS
  • Pay: $59,759 to $72,666 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is $59,759 to $72,666 based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate's knowledge, skills and experience.
  • This is a full-time, remote position.
  • Occasional travel may be required throughout the Southern California region and the State of California depending on safety protocols.
  • The Public Health Alliance is fiscally administered by the Public Health Institute (PHI). This position is eligible for PHI's full suite of benefits including but not limited to medical, dental, and vision coverage, health care and dependent care flexible spending accounts, and generous time off.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
This position reports to the Public Health Alliance's Director of Administration & Climate Initiatives, and works collaboratively with Public Health Alliance members and staff, consultants, and other partners to advance health equity and racial justice.
