Reata Engineering & Machine Works, Inc. (“Reata”), a state-of-the-art contract manufacturer specializing in comprehensive machining and assembly services, is seeking CNC Machinists. This position is ideal for individuals who thrive on tackling the toughest challenges in the production of complex medical products, semiconductor capital equipment, aerospace, defense, and industrial products. With a culture that values endless improvement and cutting-edge technology, Reata offers a unique opportunity for machinists to grow and excel in their careers.

Job Details

  • Position Title: CNC Operator or CNC Machinist
  • Position Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
  • Available Shifts: Weekdays, Weeknights, Weekend Days, Weekend Nights
  • Pay Range: See below[1]

Overview

As a CNC machinist, you will use blueprints, sketches, or computer-aided design (CAD) and manufacturing files to produce precision parts. You will set up different types of CNC equipment for your work to accomplish goals with accuracy while also maintaining high production rates. You will make sure your CNC machines are set up correctly, functioning properly, and producing parts that meet the required specifications.

The role of our CNC machinists is to operate and maintain CNC machines. This includes reviewing sample parts against drawings or CAD models to ensure accurate production and take precise measurements for cutting/shaping tasks using appropriate machine settings. Your responsibilities include reviewing samples, drawings, or instructions to understand the specifications for the machine output, taking measurements and marking material for cutting or shaping, and planning the sequence of necessary actions for completing a job. Your responsibilities also include selecting appropriate machines and their positions needed for a given job, loading material for that job, determining, and programming the size of batches and the machine speed needed, monitoring machines while they are in operation to adjust the feed, maintaining proper temperature, identifying any issues that may need correction, checking the machine output to ensure consistency with specifications, discarding defects, keeping records of approved final products, and performing routine machine maintenance or performing corrective maintenance actions.

Skills

Our CNC machinists are required to be proficient in all aspects of CNC machining, including milling, turning, close tolerance manufacturing, and more. Proficiency in CAD software is essential. They should have the ability to use precision tools for Quality Control and Metrology (such as calipers), be able to take accurate measurements, have knowledge of the properties of metal and other materials, and possess the ability to read blueprints, schematics, and manuals. They also require physical stamina and strength to lift heavy items and be possessive of good math skills.

Characteristics

Our CNC machinists love working with computers. They enjoy the challenge of troubleshooting when things go wrong and are detail-oriented since they are usually producing parts with tight tolerances where even fractions of a millimeter count. They have a passion for creating things and are effective at time management.

Our CNC machinists also possess good problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions. CNC machining is, by far, an automated process, but automation is not a guarantee of problem-free production. There will always be things that need to be adjusted or unforeseen issues that will arise. Our CNC machinists are also team players since they work closely with engineers, production supervisors and quality control inspectors.

Additional characteristics include:

  • Ability to read blueprints and part drawings.
  • Programming and setup of CNC machines.
  • Ability to set up and operate machine tools for drilling, milling, and deburring.
  • Knowledge of properties of metal and other materials.
  • Knowledge of reading calipers and gauges.
  • On-the-job CNC machining experience.
  • Leadership and effective management skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advanced Machine Operation: Operate advanced CNC machinery, including vertical milling, turning, Swiss turning, 5-axis, and 5-axis multitasking equipment, to produce high-quality parts as per specifications. This includes working with automated systems such as robots, bar-feeders, and automated palletizing systems.
  • Quality Assurance and Precision: Conduct detailed inspections of machined parts using advanced precision measuring tools to ensure they meet stringent specifications and quality standards, particularly for industries such as medical, aerospace, and defense.
  • Machine Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform preventive maintenance on advanced CNC machines and troubleshoot minor issues, ensuring continuous operation and minimizing downtime in a high-tech manufacturing environment.
  • Technical Documentation: Accurately document production processes, machine settings, and quality control measures, adhering to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485, and AS9100:2016 standards.
  • Safety and Compliance: Follow strict safety protocols and contribute to maintaining a safe work environment, in compliance with ITAR registrations and aerospace and medical industry standards.

Daily Tasks and Responsibilities

For a CNC Machinist at Reata, the day-to-day tasks and responsibilities are designed to support the production of complex products across various industries such as medical, aerospace, defense, and semiconductor. The role involves a combination of technical skill, precision, and a commitment to quality. Below is a more detailed list of the day-to-day tasks and responsibilities for this position:

Machine Operation and Setup

  • Setting Up Machines: Configure CNC machines for specific jobs, including selecting the correct tools, dies, and fixtures. Input control instructions into machine software, ensuring parameters are accurately set for the job at hand, such as speeds, feeds, and tool paths.
  • Material Preparation: Select and prepare raw materials for machining, ensuring they are correctly dimensioned and secure on machine beds or in holding fixtures.
  • Machining Operations: Operate CNC machines to execute cutting, drilling, milling, or turning operations as specified in the job orders. Monitor the machining process and make real-time adjustments to machine settings to maintain accuracy and efficiency. Ensure parts are deburred and free of contaminants and are prepped for safe handling throughout the shop. Rework and/or repair parts according to acceptable supervisor or engineering instructions. Ensure the time spent on each job is accurately recorded in our ERP system.

Quality Control and Inspection

  • First Article Inspection: Perform detailed inspections of the first part produced to ensure it meets all specified dimensions and quality requirements before proceeding with full production.
  • Ongoing Quality Checks: Conduct routine quality checks on parts being produced, using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to ensure ongoing adherence to strict specifications.
  • Documentation: Keep accurate records of inspection results, noting any deviations or quality issues, and report these findings to supervisors or quality control teams.

Machine Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Routine Maintenance: Perform daily and weekly maintenance tasks on CNC machines, including cleaning, lubricating, and checking for wear or damage to tools and fixtures.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and diagnose operational problems with CNC machines, making minor adjustments or repairs as authorized. Escalate more significant issues to maintenance teams for resolution.

Safety and Compliance

  • Safety Protocols: Adhere to all workplace safety guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), maintaining clean and organized work areas, and following procedures for safe machine operation.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all activities comply with relevant industry standards and certifications, such as ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485, AS9100:2016, and ITAR regulations. This includes keeping accurate records of scrap material resulting from machining processes as wells as identifying and documenting the reasons for scrap, such as tool wear, setup errors, or programming mistakes.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Work Order Management: Review and understand job orders, blueprints, and machining instructions. Clarify any uncertainties with supervisors or engineers before starting a job.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with fellow machinists, engineers, and quality control staff to ensure smooth production processes and address any issues that arise.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in team meetings and training sessions, providing feedback on processes and suggesting improvements to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety.
