Summary of Position

The Red Rocks Community College Chemistry Department is seeking enthusiastic professionals that have a passion for teaching and helping students succeed in their chosen field. We are fortunate to have a historically strong transfer agreement to Colorado School of Mines and attract a motivated and intellectually curious group of students. The successful candidate creates a classroom climate that encourages learning.
Part-time Instructors provide instructional duties for the College in their respective areas of expertise. They report to the department chair within the discipline and do not have any supervisory responsibilities. Responsibilities include instruction, student assessment, and other related instructional duties. Instructional delivery may include face-to-face, hybrid, and online. Classes may be held days, evenings, and weekends.
The instructor must be patient and respectful, while also providing their expectations for what is considered acceptable work. The instructor must display dedication to the class as well as the goals of the program.
This posting will be used to fill multiple part-time Instructor vacancies. Finalist must be willing to make Colorado their primary workplace, including for online courses. Instructors will need to be available to teach days and/or evenings on a part-time basis.

Positions are available for teaching are: CHE 1011(Introduction to Chemistry I with Lab) or
CHE 1111 (General College Chemistry with Lab).
**Payment is based on the credit hour/contact hour and class ratio as assigned to you by the department chair. RRCC starts at $1572.86 - 1$720.14/credit hour.**

Essential Responsibilities

Classroom Instruction: Required to meet all class periods and start and end classes promptly. Teach assigned curriculum and make use of required texts and materials. Provide students with a complete syllabus before the first day of class that includes information on course description, objectives, assignments, grading policies, and contact information. Provide data on student attendance (no-shows, last day of attendance, etc.), promptly. Use technology to facilitate learning including meeting the required minimum standards for the use of the College learning management system Desire2Learn (D2L).
Student Assessment (Grading): Maintain updated and accurate grading records in D2L and submit all final grades by the due date in the college student information system, Banner. Provide consistent and timely feedback to students regarding progress and grades on assignments.
Planning: Prepare for each class meeting and consider learning strategies that address diverse learning styles and a diverse community college student population. Class content and assessment methods should relate to course objectives.
Communication: Respond timely to students and RRCC staff every 24-48 hours during the class term and for at least one week after grades are submitted. Attend department staff meetings throughout the semester as scheduled. Provide updates to the department chair.
Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills:

  • Develop lesson plans, activities, and assessments that lead students to successfully attain identified course competencies.
  • Evaluate student performance in accordance with student learning outcomes as stated in the course syllabus.
  • Teach assigned classes in keeping with the community college philosophy.
  • Provide the Faculty Lead with a copy of the course syllabus one week prior to the first day of class.
  • At the first class meeting, provide students with a syllabus for the course that includes all components of the course model syllabus and the competencies established in the Colorado Common Course Numbering System.
  • Conduct student evaluations of instruction in accordance with established policies and procedures at the end of the semester.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance and grading of students in the college learning management system, Desire2Learn (D2L).
  • Complete the Desire2Learn (D2L) training and New Faculty and Instructor Orientation.
  • Participate in coaching/mentoring and assessment initiatives established by the Department Chair and/or Faculty Lead.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:A Master’s degree from a fully accredited institution in Chemistry or a closely related field and at least 18 graduate hours in Chemistry. 30 credit hours of teaching experience in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications: A Master’s degree from a fully accredited institution in Chemistry and at least 18 graduate hours in Chemistry. Experience teaching at the college level. Experience teaching online Demonstrated knowledge of and experience using non-traditional learning environments. Membership in or experience working in diverse communities and supporting the success of students and staff from racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that are underrepresented.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities : Demonstrated ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated ability and willingness to teach students using traditional and alternative methods of instruction. Demonstrated ability to integrate technology into the classroom.
Physical and Cognitive Demands: The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.

  • This position operates in a standard office and/or classroom environment. Constantly uses a computer and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc. Requires the repetitious movement of hands, wrists, arms.
  • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.
  • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Occasionally moves, positions, and transports equipment and supplies weighing up to 10 lbs.

Medical insurance is offered to instructors and other variable hour employees who have worked, on average, at least 30 hours per week in a 12-month period. RRCC/CCCS uses an initial 12-month measurement period to determine medical benefit eligibility, and a 12-month standard measurement period. Student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours a week when classes are in session, and may work up to 28 hours a week, during academic breaks or breaks between terms at the discretion of the college, and non-classified hourly and temporary staff are limited to 28 hours in a workweek, depending on budget and need. Sick leave is granted in accordance with SB20-205, Sick Leave for Employees, accrued at one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours per year.
Instructors and non-student hourly are required to contribute to Colorado PERA at a fixed percentage of their salary and do not contribute to Social Security. RRCC/CCCS student employees are not eligible to participate in PERA. RRCC/CCCS offers three tax-deferred investment plans, including 401(k), 403(b) and 457. Employee assistance services such as counseling, professional coaching, financial planning, and more, are available to you and members of your household at no cost through the Colorado State Employee Assistance Program (C-SEAP). State employees are eligible to participate in BenefitHub which offers discounts for retailers and services and other benefits resources.
