CURRENT OPPORTUNITY: Superintendent

Directs activities of workers concerned with construction of buildings, highways, bridges or other construction projects by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Studies specifications to plan procedures for construction on basis of starting and completion times and staffing requirements for each phase of construction.
  • Assembles current employers or new hires for projects.
  • Orders tools, equipment and materials to be delivered at specified times to conform to work schedules.
  • Confers with and directs supervisory personnel and subcontractors engaged in planning and executing work procedures, interpreting specifications, and coordinating various phases of construction to prevent delays.
  • Confers with supervisory personnel and labor representatives to resolve complaints and grievances within work force.
  • Confers with supervisory and engineering personnel and inspectors and suppliers of tools and materials to resolve construction problems and improve construction methods.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications and the adherence to construction schedules.
  • Prepares or reviews reports on progress, materials used and costs, and adjusts work schedules as indicated by reports.
  • Directs workers concerned with major maintenance or reconditioning projects for existing installations.
  • Maintains positive relationships with Owners, Architect, Engineers, Subcontractors and Suppliers.
  • Assists the estimating and pre construction departments with technical expertise, constructability review, estimating and schedules.
  • Insure jobsite safety and implements all state and federal law are being followed by all employees and trades onsite.
  • Mentors and trains employees as necessary.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Management varies dependent on project size and scope. Superintendents are responsible for supervising the Foreman, Operators and Welders. Superintendents are also responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Also directly supervises one non-supervisory employee. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software. Use of Project Management software is a plus.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Contractor licenses are a plus, OSHA Certifications are a plus, Current Driver’s License.

Other Qualifications

8 to 10 years related experience or equivalent role in Commercial, Highway or Bridge Construction.
