JOB TITLE: Director of Performing Arts Center

FLSA Status: Exempt

Pay Grade: Administrative

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under limited supervision, assists in planning, implementing, and directing the activities of the district's Performing Arts Center (PAC). Schedules productions and programs according to and in compliance with District policy. Supports, supervises, and instructs event directors and technicians regarding technical logistics and the production of scenic designs for live events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists the in planning, implementing, and directing the activities of the Performing Arts Center for the district. Participates in the planning and implementation of the policies and procedures related to operations of the Performing Arts Center.

Supervises the duties of assigned support staff. Supervisory duties include instructing, assigning, reviewing, and planning the work of others; selecting new employees; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; and allocating personnel. Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers training, advice, and assistance as needed.

Plans, organizes, schedules, coordinates, and communicates PAC operations, events, and performances with district and external groups, including using technical and non-technical equipment. Prepares contracts, handles reports for billings, and arranges contracted services to support performances.

Consults with organizations to ensure that all District regulations, SC fire and safety codes and laws, etc., are followed during events.

Ensures all licenses, agreements, and other regulatory requirements are met and followed.

Provides technical assistance for program planning, lighting design, set design, and construction. Ensures that all equipment and props are used safely.

Implements the lighting design, operates the lighting board, runs the sound system, and acts as stage manager for District performances as needed. Keeps up-to-date with advances in lighting and sound technology and incorporates those advances as applicable to events, activities, and performances.

Provides and schedules technical assistance as needed for systems issues during performances.

Assists in determining procurement needs for technical systems for the District’s performance spaces.Maintains a running inventory of all technical equipment and research, recommends and orders new equipment as needed.

Performs maintenance and/or contracts with third-party providers to service theatrical systems and equipment.

Markets the Performing Arts Center to attract national and regional acts and performances. Solicits local organizations for PAC bookings.

Coordinates with external stakeholders for sponsorships and other revenue-generating agreements.

Assists, upon request, with the management and/or technical support for other District auditoriums.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals effectively in a professional, tactful, and courteous manner.

Prepares and/or processes studies, reports, policies and procedures, performance evaluations, memos, correspondence, etc.

Coordinates special projects and programs as assigned.

Operates general office equipment such as a computer, printer, calculator, copier, fax machine, and telephone.

Performs routine administrative/office tasks as required, including preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, sending and receiving faxes, entering and retrieving computer data, etc.

Willingly performs other duties as assigned or requested.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in theatre management, theatre with a technical emphasis, media arts, technical direction, or a related discipline with five to seven years of experience in theatre or arena management or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge:

Knowledge of the policies, practices, activities, methods and procedures of the District as they pertain to the specific duties of the Director of Performing Arts. Specific knowledge of and proficiency in the design and operation of theatrical systems such as lighting, rigging, audio and stage management. Specific knowledge of set design and construction. Ability to communicate effectively and to establish good working relationships with District employees and the general public. Ability to assess user needs and plan for trouble-free performances. Ability to carry out the business management functions of theatre operations. Ability to work a flexible schedule, with variances in days and hours. Ability to effectively promote and schedule the PAC to ensure maximum use and benefit to the District and the community. Demonstrated aptitude or competence for the job functions. Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in directing and managing the scope of authority. Knowledge of the required records, diagrams, specifications, charts, documents, and related information must be prepared and maintained as a requirement of the position. Knowledge of technical disciplines needed to make necessary assessments and recommendations. Knowledge of the principles of management, supervision, and staff development.

Skills/Effort:

Demonstrated technical and management skills to improve programs of performing arts and theatre services. Proven ability in personnel management and budgeting; excellent work ethic including time management, workflow management, self-motivation, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to supervise and work collaboratively as part of a team; flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings, as necessary.

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with District staff. Ability to instruct others through explanation, demonstration, and supervised practice and/or make recommendations according to technical disciplines. Ability to complete, process, and maintain all required records, reports, and related information. Ability to assist in the preparation and monitoring of the department(s) budget. Ability to operate general office equipment and field equipment and tools as needed.

Additional Physical, Cognitive, and Other Requirements:

Duties involve work in an office, school, or construction environment, including standing, walking, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, stretching, lifting, and sedentary duties. Must exert between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurrent basis and use fingers, hands, and limbs in tasks that require considerable adeptness and speed. Must be able to talk, read, and hear. Must effectively perceive and exchange information in a variety of oral, written, diagrammatic, and/or printed formats. Requires the ability to apply judgment and complex logic in defining problems, collecting information, and drawing valid conclusions. Must make sound decisions related to budgeting, facility management, and building trades, construction, renovation, etc. Must effectively exert influence and apply effective leadership principals in diagnosing problems, making recommendations and supervising others. Duties require successful adaption to stressors, emergencies, volatile situations, tight deadlines, etc. Must be able to record and exchange complex data, follow or deliver detailed verbal or written instructions. Duties require the ability to conduct performance appraisals, prepare and interpret complex studies, records and reports, and implement District policies and procedures. Must prepare correspondence and enter data in correct form including proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Must possess the ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide, determine decimals and percents, and use mathematical formulas. Must be able to compare and analyze information in numeric or symbolic form, and appropriately process color, depth and spatial relationships. Must have sufficient hand, eye and foot coordination to use or operate maintenance or standard office equipment, items, and supplies. Duties of the job require routine keyboard operations and the frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment.

Working Conditions:

School, office, construction, or outdoor environment with moderate exposure to environmental/weather conditions. Physical demands are generally restricted to work site operations requiring the movement or lifting of items weighing up to one hundred pounds. Routine local travel is required; occasional overnight travel is required. Requires the ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require considerable attention and meeting tight deadlines. Flexible schedule with weekend and evening work required.

Responsibility:

Responsible for any assigned departmental budgets.

Supervises departmental staff.
