Substitute Teacher Overview:
Rivendell Guest Teachers are an integral part of our school community. Many have multiple offers each year to fill in when Rivendell teachers are unable to be at school for any period of time. Guest Teachers must be flexible and at the same time have an understanding of and commitment to Rivendell’s community and teaching philosophies.
Rivendell’s philosophy of individualized education requires teachers to implement methods that ensure each child has his or her needs met in an individualized manner. Students learn reading, writing, and math at an individualized pace and level. Systems are in place in each classroom to ensure that this philosophy is upheld. As a guest teacher, it is important to honor these systems as described in the substitute lesson plans. Other content areas such as science and social studies are taught through school-wide units each month, approximately. While still individualized, sometimes these lessons are taught to smaller or larger groups of students. Specials (music, art, computers, Spanish, German, and PE), are also part of the daily schedule, respectively.
Background Checks:
All substitute teachers are required to have background checks.
Daily Schedule:
7:45 a.m. – Arrive to review sub plans and prepare for the day.
*A daily schedule will be left for you. This schedule includes breaks and planning time. As a substitute, it is required that you remain in the building during the course of the day, even when during a scheduled “break.”
3:45 p.m. – Substitute’s day is complete. After-school duties may be required for substitutes. See teacher's notes for assignments.
Payment:
Discipline:
If a problem arises in the classroom, please alert the front office as soon as possible. You can do this by letting your teaching partner know, or you can send a student to the front office. Do not discuss discipline issues with other parents or students.
Playground:
Sometimes a teacher’s schedule requires that you supervise lunch or recess duty. When on the playground, do your best to observe students by walking around the playground and paying attention to student behavior. There will usually be other staff members outside with you, so you can ask for help if needed.
Other Expectations:
Rivendell does not allow alcohol on the premises. Smoking is not allowed. Adults employed by Rivendell are expected to be models of good character for the students who attend. If you have a question about what is allowed or not allowed, please ask.
