Summary:
The OB Unit Secretary is an individual who performs clerical and receptionist duties on the nursing unit. Moreover, the Unit Secretary is often the liaison between the unit and other hospital departments, the physician, other nursing units, the patient and/or family. Additionally, the Unit Secretary ensures the proper level of supplies to meet patient care demands.
Experience/Education Requirements:
  • High School diploma or its equivalent preferred.
  • Courses in communication, speech, business, and medical terminology are recommended.
    License or Certification Requirements:
  • None required
  • Certification as Unit Secretary is highly desirable
Responsibilities:
  • Alert RNs to lab results & file printed copies
  • Answers patient, family, hospital staff or physician inquiries or refer to as appropriate
  • Attendance at 50% or more of unit meetings
  • Do registration
  • Documenting/relaying messages
  • Enter clinical circumstances and charges
  • Enter Physician orders competently, obtain needed printouts
  • Familiar with Infant Security System and troubleshoot as necessary
  • Mail weekly birth announcements to newspaper
  • Make up new charts as needed.
  • File prenatal records (L&D Only)
  • Obtain accurate information from parents for birth certificates.
  • Obtain pertinent information needed for photographers
  • Order supplies as needed for patients, parents, unit & office and stock supplies after order is received
  • Participate in admitting and discharging patient process
  • Printer/fax troubleshooting, load paper
  • Schedule prenatal classes for prenatal education instructors and record names of participants for Bladder Control lectures (OB only)
  • Send order copies to Pharmacy.
  • File daily medication summaries
  • Sort/distribute incoming mail.
  • Change video camera tapes on a daily basis
  • Thin charts as needed, filing old charts, lab x-ray results, consult report, H&Ps.
  • Place needed documents on charts.
  • Transcribe physician orders
