Position OverviewRiverside Research is a national security non-profit dedicated to providing high-end technical services, research and development, and prototype solutions for some of the nation's most complex technical challenges. Established in 1967 from a respected research laboratory at Columbia University, our focus areas encompass Secure and Resilient Systems, AI/ML, THz Imaging, Radar Systems, ISR capabilities, and Commercial Intelligence. Our primary clients include the Intelligence Community and the Department of Defense. As a national security non-profit, one of Riverside's key advantages lies in our ability to invest in technology at significantly higher levels of commitment than our for-profit counterparts. Leading our R&D investment is the Riverside Open Innovation Center (OIC), directed by Rob Denz, which includes specialized groups focusing on Secure and Resilient Systems, as well as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Riverside is expanding our OIC to incorporate a dedicated group focused on RF systems and Electronic Warfare (EW).

ResponsibilitiesRiverside Research is seeking a senior dynamic, strategic, operational, and growth focused RF Director to lead a team of research and development focused on providing RF solutions to the Defense and Intelligence Communities. As a key member of our Open Innovation Center, the Director will pursue and grow opportunities with government research organizations (e.g. DARPA, IARPA, service labs, etc.), lead our corporate-wide Independent Research & Development (IR&D) efforts in optics, transition technology into our other business units, and manage existing R&D contracts. The Director will manage team members located across Fairfax, Lexington, and Beavercreek research offices while reporting to the Vice President of the Open Innovation Center Business Unit.
Responsibilities of the RF Director include but are not limited to:
  • Development of the portfolio strategy to pursue R&D funding to achieve annual growth
  • Provide technical direction, leadership, and management oversight of a substantial IR&D budget in RF research.
  • Lead and shape capture and proposals, developing strategy to expand our existing technology baseline in alignment with the Riverside Research wide strategy and vision.
  • Significant customer interaction, initiating customer contact to create new business opportunities at DoD and IC research and development organizations such as DARPA, IARPA, NRO, AFRL, ONR, ARL, SDA, etc.
  • Collaboration across the larger Riverside Research organization to facilitate the development and transition of revolutionary RF Solutions in important technology areas in the sensor technology space, including signal processing, RF and optical hardware, machine learning/artificial intelligence, system integration, field testing, data collection, missions and CONOPs, open architectures, and software development
  • Experience as a Principal Investigator for programs, setting technical direction and guiding teams in executing complex research projects that regularly involving multiple technical fields
  • Grow the next generation of associate directors, managers, and scientists through mentorship
  • A leader that is responsible for developing consensus from among competing inputs to include customer feedback, diverse technical opinions, and team dynamics

Desired Qualificaions
  • Active TS/SCI clearance
  • Experience with RF (passive and active) signal processing, Adaptive signal processing / optimization, Detection, tracking and classification, Algorithm development / Data analysis, Modeling & Simulation
  • Experience with RF hardware systems and / or software defined radios (SDRs)
  • Experience with programming and scripting languages (e.g., VHDL, C, Cpre , CUDA, Matlab, Python, Bash) using common industry standards and open architecture approaches
  • Technology roadmap development experience
  • Has an existing network of USG Customer contacts at DoD and IC research and development organizations, or has experience growing and maintaining a Customer contact network
  • Demonstrated success in leading the capture of DoD and / or IC R&D opportunities at organizations as DARPA, AFRL, ONR, ARL, SDA, IARPA, NRO
  • Proven ability to lead a diverse organization across multiple sites
  • A PhD degree in related field (Engineering, Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, etc.) and several years of relevant experience
