GENERAL SUMMARY
The Chaplains report to the Manager of Patient/Family Relations.
 
Chaplains are responsible for providing age and developmentally appropriate spiritual care to hospital patients. Regardless of personal religious affiliation, the chaplain provides a non-denominational approach in assessing and providing patient and family spiritual needs. The Chaplain conducts informal and formal spiritual services to provide support to patients, families and staff in response to identified needs or internal or external events.
 
Chaplains are part of the Patient/Family Relations Department and work collaboratively with the Patient Ambassador and the Psychologists to mitigate patient and family anxiety related to their illness or progression to the next level of care.
 
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. In interactions with patient The Chaplain demonstrates respect for patients/families religious and spiritual views. The Chaplain provides a supportive approach consistent with the patient’s expressed belief system, regardless of the patient’s religious affiliation.
  2. Supports the Mission and Vision of RML Specialty Hospital by demonstrating RML’s Core Values of Service, Teamwork, Accountability, Integrity, Respect and Stewardship (STAIRS) in all actions. Promotes a positive patient/customer experience by exemplifying the principles of the Language of Caring in all interactions with patients, families and coworker.
  3. The Chaplain:
    1. Assesses needs in terms of stressors, support, and sources of meaning and hope
    2. Plans for assisting the patient and family to deal with their unique stressors through support and sources of meaning.
    3. Implements the plan through individual visits and scheduled religious services
    4. Evaluates and documents the outcome of the visits, in terms of the patient or family’s ability to integrate illness and end of life issues into their own lives
  4. The Chaplain responds to:
    1. Spiritual needs which may or may not be religious: loss, grief, change, discouragement, loss of hope, absence of support systems, conflicts in values, questions related to the meaning of life and death, ethical issues, end of life decisions, etc.
    2. Religious concerns: the patient or family’s specific wish to address issues to God/higher being, church, prayer, guilt, shame, desire for Scripture, reconciliation, forgiveness, community, and the ultimate meanings of a person’s life and death;
    3. Sacramental needs: baptism, communion, anointing, blessing, etc.
  5. The Chaplain is trained in the appropriate use of pastoral skills. The Chaplain assists patients/families through sensitive listening, facilitation, counseling and activation of appropriate resources for healing and adjustment to illness, death and dying. The Chaplain assists patients/families in recognizing and activating their own resources and support mechanisms.
  6. The Chaplain makes follow-up visits to patients based upon the pastoral assessment, paying particular attention to the expressed needs and desires of the patient/family. Special attention will be shown to the seriously ill, the dying, patients/families with ethical concerns, and those demonstrating problems with coping.
  7. After express or implied permission is received from the patient/decision maker, the Chaplain prays with patients according to their religious customs.
  8. Maintains the confidentiality of the patient’s medical informational verbally, on-line and in print. Complies with all hospital policies related to computer use and system security; complies with HIPAA guidelines.
  9. The Chaplain represents RML in establishing and maintaining collegial relationships with area churches, synagogues and places of worship. Coordinates and facilitates the availability of ministers and clergy of various denominations to hospital patients.
  10. The Chaplain participates in family orientation, support and education groups. The Chaplain leads religious services, both scheduled and in response to identified patient, family or staff needs. 
  11. The Chaplain is responsible for responding to family/decision maker needs related to bereavement follow-up and anticipated deaths.
  12. The Chaplain works as a member of the health care team to facilitate a comprehensive approach to patient care. The Chaplain participates in interdisciplinary staffings and in individual family meetings as appropriate or requested. 
  13. The Chaplain participates in Ethics Consultations and Committee meetings as requested.
  14. The Chaplain participates in the Patient Family Experience Committee meetings.
  15. Assists the department with patient satisfaction survey distribution and efforts to improve the return rate and outcomes.
  16. Actively participate in the Patient/Family Relations Department activities, including but not limited to, support groups, prayer blankets, and fundraising events.
  17.  Assists with touring potential patient families.
  18. The Chaplain provides staff support, including incident stress debriefing, grief counseling, etc. The Chaplain provides inservices on aspects of patient spiritual support and related topics.
  19.  Assists the department with patient satisfaction survey distribution and efforts to improve the return rate and outcomes.
  20. The Chaplain establishes and maintains a meditation space within RML and makes available religious and spiritually supportive literature and other materials.
  21. The Chaplain identifies actual or potential problems in the provision of services and takes initiative to resolve problems directly. 
  22. Participates in or leads performance improvement initiatives to improve patient care or facility operations. Implements all appropriate initiatives in support of hospital patient safety goals.
  23. Assists the Patient/Family Relations Department with implementation and staff training of patient satisfaction programs which reflect RML’s missions and values in collaboration with the Education Department.
  24. The Chaplain supports a safe work environment for self, patients and others. Reports unsafe conditions; Implements safe work practices including adherence to infection controls standards and appropriate PPE. Implements applicable components of patient safety initiatives.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS
Skills and Abilities (Minimum)

  • The interpersonal skills to interact sensitively and compassionately with persons from all backgrounds, socio-economic status, education levels and religious affiliation.
  • The nonjudgmental communication skills to respond to unique patient/family/staff needs and provide individualized, non-denominational support.
  • The personal maturity and grounded sense of self to consistently provide compassionate, positive support despite continuous exposure to the crises, stress and grief of others.
  • The flexibility to respond to urgent and changing spiritual care needs, and the ability to prioritize activities and arrange support services to address needs seven days/week.

 Knowledge and Experience (Minimum)

  • Four years Clinical Pastoral care experience in a hospital setting.
  • Experience of counseling patients and family in palliative care, end of life issues, and medical ethics
  • Bachelor of Divinity degree (required)
  • (Masters in Pastoral Counseling or related field from an accredited institution preferred)

 License / Certifications

  • General certification in chaplaincy
  • (Certification by a National Pastoral Care Association (NACC/APC) preferred)

 Work is performed in a patient care setting and office environment.
