Roanoke City Public Schools is Hiring an ELL Instructional Assistant Near Roanoke, VA

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude other duties if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this position.   • Assists the ELL teacher with instructional activities; assists ELL students to reinforce material already presented through special efforts and repetitions; prepares and maintains files and reports.
  • Assists ELL classroom teacher(s) in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks.
  • Assists in providing individual and small-group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils’ intellectual and linguistic abilities.
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior.
  • Prepares instructional materials; reads to students; helps students learn to write effectively.
  • Assists the ELL classroom teacher in creating an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Helps plan daily and long-range lessons and classroom activities.
  • Conducts learning exercises with small groups of ELL students.
  • Instructs ELL students on use of computer software; prepares lesson plans.
  • Teaches keyboarding skills; helps ELL students with problem solving and language skills.
  • Alerts the ELL teacher to special needs of individual ELL students.
  • Provides escort and assistance to ELL students when necessary.
  • Scores required ELL assessments and enters data into computer.
  • Checks ELL student work for compliance with ELL teacher’s instructions.
  • Assists ELL students with reading, spelling, and handwriting skills.
  • Helps maintain individual records for each ELL student.
  • Collects and displays suitable material for educational displays; preserves displays; decorates classroom.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assists in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Helps maintain order in the classroom; monitors ELL students and keeps them on task.
  • Performs a variety of office assistance tasks, such as photocopying, filing, answering the telephone, etc., as required.
  • Selects and checks out library materials for ELL teacher’s use.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of the practices, methods, and techniques used in classroom teaching; ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports; ability to work effectively with students and teachers; skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment; ability to operate standard office, word, and data processing equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students, and associates; ability to speak Spanish preferred. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Applicants must have a minimum of 2 years college experience OR have successfully completed Parapro Assessment. Applicants must satisfy Title I Instructional employment eligibility requirements. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; some medium work requires the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication as well as non-vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken and non-spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. This position requires the ability to communicate (oral and written), coordinate, instruct, compute, and to evaluate on a consistent and on-going basis. WORK ENVIRONMENT

The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and noise.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
