    POSITION SUMMARY INFORMATION: Essential Duties and Requirement Details

    Position Summary:
    Under the direction of the Director of Student Services, the HSC will counsel individuals and provide group educational and vocational guidance services. The HSC will provide a proactive program that engages students, including leadership, advocacy, and collaboration with school staff, administration, and community/family members to deliver programs and activities to help students succeed. The HSC will identify and provide intervention regarding students' academic, social, and emotional needs. In addition, they will adhere to and support board policy, school guidelines, administrative rules, and directives.
    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
    • To arm students with the skills, strategies, and support they need to build the foundation for a successful and productive life.
    • Develop, implement and manage school guidance programs
    • Assist students in developing an academic plan for their current and future education
    • Identify issues that affect school performance, such as absenteeism
    • Address social and behavioral problems
    • Evaluates, and interprets academic performance data
    • Assists individuals to understand and overcome social and emotional problems
    • Interpret information about students to the student, their parents/guardians
    • Engages in research and follow-up activities to evaluate counseling techniques
    • Compiles and studies occupational, educational, and economic information to aid counselors in making and carrying out vocational and educational objectives.
    Communication/Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with administrators and parents to improve on classroom performance
    • Interpret information about students to the student, parents/guardians, and staff to appraise their interests, attitudes, abilities, and personality characteristics
    • Connect students, parents/guardians, and staff with specialized referral agencies
    Activities:
    • Conduct career and education planning activities
    • Participate in in-service activities and other activities that will promote individual growth and awareness
    • Facilitate outreach efforts to provide services to students, parents/guardians, and staff
    • Advocate on behalf of the student and their family
    Required Education:
    Master's Degree in Guidance and/or School Counseling or related field, or an educational field
    Required Qualifications:
    • Two years of full-time work experience in a similar field or teaching experience
    • Previous one-on-one communication with children/students
    • Experience working with people/children from various social and ethnic backgrounds, genders, and sexual orientations
    Certifications, Licenses:
    License as required by the Illinois School Board of Education (ISBE) equivalent
    Professional Educator License (PEL) or an
    Educator License with Stipulations (ELS) /School Support Personnel Endorsement in the area of School Counselor
    Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:
    • Verbal communication skills to discuss academic performance goals and other relevant issues
    • Written communication skills to document assessments and interaction and to track progress
    • Ability to make crucial decisions for complex issues
    • Leadership skills to motivate, mentor and encourage students
    • Organizational and time management skills
    • Active listening skills providing full attention to others
    • Learning strategies
    • Ability to work with diverse groups, cultures
