Serves as a lead Telecommunicator over an assigned shift in operating and enhanced 911 emergency system in receiving and dispatching emergency calls.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class is responsible for supervising telecommunicators in the daily operation of an enhanced 911 emergency system involving a network of complex equipment. Considerable judgment and initiative are required in making decisions during emergencies. This employee must have the ability to respond calmly and effectively. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through conferences and review of operations. Reports to the Telecommunications Manager.
Examples of Duties

• Conducts performance appraisals for assigned personnel; counsels employees on deficiencies; provides recommendations for employee's termination or disciplinary action.
• Reviews and updates standard operating procedures for the communication division.
• Ensures that all equipment is operating properly; troubleshoots problems and contacts appropriate agency to make repairs.
• Interviews prospective candidates for vacancies and makes recommendation.
• Prepares appropriate paperwork as required.
• Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Thorough knowledge of rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission.
• Thorough knowledge of the operations of a wide variety of complex communications equipment and ability to use all equipment.
• Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
• Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
• Ability to effectively supervise telecommunicators in the daily operations of the communication center.
• Ability to develop appropriate training materials and standard operating procedures.
• Ability to make quick decisions in handling emergency situations.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Physical Requirements This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation and at least three years experience as a telecommunicator. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must acquire CPR certification, NC Sheriff Standards Telecommunicator and NCEMD and NAEMD certification

Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
For Full Time employees in a regular position, insurance is available and effective the first day of the following month after having worked for an entire month. The County currently pays 100% of the cost for regular employees working at least 30 hours per week. Dependent coverage is also available.

Local Government Retirement System
All employees in regular full or part time position are required to contribute to the retirement system. Contributions are taken on a pre-tax basis. The current contribution amount is 6%.

NC 401(k)- Employees have the option of making contributions on a pre or post tax basis to a 401(k) and on a pre tax basis to a a 457(b) plan.
