Description

The Environmental Specialist will perform environmental evaluation and technical support for construction activities related to road construction and transportation projects. This role requires considerable contact with governmental agencies, clients, contractors, and project personnel. The ideal candidate must be able to prioritize multiple assignments and work independently to meet objectives and deadlines.

Requirements

  • Conduct inspections, field surveys, assessments, project investigations and prepares/reviews environmental documents to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal environmental laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to transportation projects.
  • Consults and coordinates with representatives of regulatory agencies, clients, the public and project personnel on environmental issues.
  • Coordinates and processes complex permits and licenses with resource and regulatory agencies, including wetland surveys, documentation, and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act applications, and US Fish and Wildlife Service Endangered Species Act consultations, surveys, and habitat assessments.
  • Evaluates environmental impact of transportation and construction activities as related to NEPA compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental permits and laws for client construction projects.
  • Maintains, updates and compiles detailed data in spreadsheets, files, logs, summaries, and records.
  • Monitors and documents work performed under the client contracts.
  • Adhere to all safety requirements for the position.
  • Obtain and maintain required certifications for the position.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Minimum Qualifications 

  • B.S. degree in Environmental Science, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources Management, Natural Sciences, or a related field.
  • Broad knowledge of environmental resources, including biological resources and stormwater management.
  • Familiarity with federal and state environmental regulations, including NEPA, the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and Section 404 permitting.
  • Ability to write and present technical documentation and reports, as well as analyze and interpret complex data and test results.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to balance, prioritize and organize multiple tasks and complete assignments by applicable deadlines.
  • Effective interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to travel to project work sites as needed.
  • Must meet internal requirements for operation of company vehicles throughout duration of employment and must maintain a valid driver's license and insurable driving record.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous work experience in transportation or road construction industry.
  • Previous experience in environmental permitting or compliance.
  • 1-5 years of progressive experience in environmental construction management, including aspects of planning and design.

 Work Environment 

  • Work locations include road construction sites and field offices with regular exposure to all types of weather conditions during field work. 
  • Ability to sit and work at computer workstation for extended periods
  • Loud noise levels at times (hearing protection provided)

Pay (based on experience):

  • Environmental Specialist I $20 - $30 per hour
  • Environmental Specialist II $30 - $45 per hour
