Department of English & Humanities

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position provides administrative management for the Department of English and Humanities’ Writing Center. The Writing Center Coordinator will maintain and oversee a viable tutoring program to promote retention, and teach two Composition course per semester as well as one during the summer.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

Work with Writing Faculty Liaison to establish best practices and protocols for peer-to-peer tutoring program.
Promote the Writing Center’s services.
Recruit and interview potential student tutors.
Train, schedule, and supervise student tutors.
Process student worker forms, e.g., requests, changes of status, timesheets, etc.
Manage day-to-day administrative operations of the Writing Center’s computer lab (including troubleshooting and printer maintenance).
Maintain communication with departmental Administrative Assistant regarding office supplies, student tutor records and timesheet submittals, filing of Writing Center records and documents, etc.
Oversee operation and development of online tutoring component.
Collect, analyze, and report data pertaining to Writing Center usage and student tutor performance.
Work with Writing Faculty Liaison on assessment.
Teach two Composition courses per semester; one course in the summer.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Experience in teaching expository writing and coordination of academic tutoring; excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong leadership, organizational, teaching, and entrepreneurial skills; proficient in Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, and Outlook); operation of online tutoring applications; effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s Degree in English with a concentration in Composition.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ph.D. in English, graduate courses in writing center management, experience in supervision and scheduling of student tutors.

REPORTS TO: Department Head, English and Humanities

SUPERVISION GIVEN TO: Student Writing Tutors

POSITION: Professional Employee Designation / FLSA Exempt
