Job Description
Exemption Status: Exempt Salary Grade: 27
Department/Location: Diocese of Tucson Pastoral Center/Tucson, AZ
Primary Function: Under the direction of the Controller, the Accountant is responsible for day-to-day accounting functions for nine legal entities. A successful Accountant combines excellent analytical skills with a thorough knowledge of accounting principles to analyze financial reports. The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, “…Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” (Eph. 4:1)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform in support of the Church and the diocese’s spiritual and pastoral mission.
- Shall abide by Catholic principles in the employee’s professional and private life and shall govern his/her professional and private life in strict accordance with Catholic morals and principles to demonstrate complete adherence to Catholic moral structures.
- Reconciles bank statements, balance sheet accounts and other revenue and expense accounts as necessary.
- Post all accounting transactions related to each legal entity including payroll and pension payments, benefits, contributions, and special billings.
- Performa all transactions related to event management accounting.
- Performs month-end and year-end close process.
- Compiles monthly financial statements, Accounts Receivable reports and other management reports as needed.
- Help ensure that all internal controls policies are followed.
- Perform other tasks as directed by Controller or CFO.
Required Activities: Walking; sitting; standing; stooping; reaching; talking; handling; hearing; carrying; and keyboarding.
Basic Qualifications:
- Must be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church.
- Working knowledge of the Catholic Church including familiarity with its structures.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- Highly proficient with spreadsheet software.
- Hands-on experience with accounting software.
- Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills.
- Self-starter, well-organized and a team player.
- Able to travel on occasion.
- Able to maintain confidentiality.
- Able to successfully complete a criminal history and background check.
- Professional bearing and clean and neat personal appearance.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field from an accredited institution.
- 2 years of accounting experience including financial statement preparation.
- Preference will be given to those with a CPA or master’s degree in business, Finance or Accounting
- Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
