Purpose: To keep buildings and grounds safe, neat, clean, and presentable at all times. An employee in this class performs routine manual work, cleaning and maintaining buildings. The eployee performs recurring tasks in accordance with established practices and cleaning schedules. When problems arise, an employee in this class will refer them to the head custodian or supervisor. Supervision is direct with frequent inspections to assure completion of assignments in accordance with inspections to assure completion of assignments in accordance with instructions and standards of cleanliness.
Qualifications: Successful work experience
Physical Requirements: Depending on the job duties assigned for the day, the employees may perform lifting and pulling on a more frequent or less frequent basis. However, job duties may change throughout the week depending on the needs of the individual department or school at which the employee may be working. Bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling, crouching, and being on feet for extended periods of time may be frequent occurrence. Walking backwards will be a common requirement, especially when assisting in finishing floors. Lifting up to 50 pounds, more than 50 pounds with assistance, may be a common requirement. Climbing ladders up to 25 feet may be required on occasion.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Some knowledge of cleaning methods, material and equipment
• Willingness to learn skills in the use of custodial equipment used in routine cleaning
• Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Strip and refinish floors
• Clean restroom facilities daily
• Maintain appearance of grounds and parking areas
• To assist any way deemed necessary by principal/assistant principal/head custodian/custodial manager Illustrative Examples of Work:
• Scrubs, sweeps, mops, vacuums, finish and burnish floors in rooms and hallways
• Dusts and arranges furniture
• Washes windows, woodwork, walls and other surfaces
• Scrubs and cleans restroom fixtures, walls, and floors
• Replenishes tissue, towels, and soap in restrooms, classrooms, and offices
• Replaces light bulbs and florescent tubes
• Empties wastebaskets and other trash receptacles
• Locks and unlocks doors
• Sorts and stores material for recycling program
• Reports to head custodian or supervisor any damages or needed repairs
• Picks up paper and other trash in school buildings or on school grounds
