Assistant Director for Community Standards Position Summary: Under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Student Life, the Assistant Director for Community Standards is accountable for assisting in the oversight and management of the student conduct system. The Assistant Director will investigate student conduct complaints, serve as a disciplinary hearing officer, and facilitate educational programs.
The mission of the Office of Community Standards is to articulate to students the standards of behavior expected within the University community. Standards of student conduct ensure respect for all community members and maintenance of a collaborative and learning-centered environment as described in the University's mission statement.
This is a full-time, 12-month contract position.Functional Areas of Responsibility: Student Discipline Community Standards
Essential Duties And Responsibilities(The following duties are customary of this position but are not to be construed as all-inclusive; other duties may be added, deleted, and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs):
Student Discipline
  • Assist in the oversight and management of the student conduct system for the Rowan University Campus.
  • Assist in managing the student conduct system and processes for alleged violations; Serve as a resource and consultant to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Investigate complaints, maintain confidential records, and ensure institutional compliance and reporting.
  • Serve as primary liaison to the Office of Residential Learning and University Housing in coordinating and adjudicating alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct in campus housing facilities.
  • Providing supervision to graduate students as well as indirect supervision to Residential Learning staff and other University staff who have some responsibility for student and/or student organization discipline.
  • Develop workshops, educational and informational, and coordinate educational outreach activities.
  • Develop office resources, including written materials, forms, information on services, a website and workshops, and other appropriate resources.
  • Manage the online conduct database.
  • Serve as a hearing officer when informal resolution is required and/or desired to resolve individual or group conflict; refer reported violations to the appropriate hearing officer or board for disciplinary actions; and represent the university at formal hearings.
  • Assist in developing policy initiatives concerning student behavior and the disciplinary process.
  • Develop and implement outreach and educational programs about the Student Code of Conduct for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Serve on various committees and attend public meetings to obtain and disseminate information.
Community Standards
  • Work closely with the Assistant Dean of Student Life on the research, benchmarking, and identification of best practices for developing, implementing, and evaluating on and off-campus community standards.
  • Monitor the management of records and files and implement a computerized database program. Provide administrative oversight of student disciplinary records.
  • Assisted in designing and implementing extensive training and ongoing advisement of conduct boards. Serve as a facilitator, trainer, and subject matter expert for professional and graduate staff development.
  • Serve as trainer/facilitator for student leadership development activities offered by the Division of Student Life.
  • Participate in and, as appropriate, coordinate programs and services to support orientation for first-year, transfer, and graduate students.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Civic Involvement.
  • Days, evenings, weekends, and other hours required.
Education
  • A Master's degree in higher education administration, counselor education, student development, student personnel services, or a related field is required.
Qualifications
    • Two or more years of experience adjudicating student conduct cases in a higher education setting.
    • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, senior administration, and off-campus constituencies as a campus representative.
    • Ability to maintain an appropriate level of professional and personal confidentiality.
    • Ability to work in a stressful environment and with great attention to detail.
    • Demonstrated commitment and sensitivity to the needs of a culturally diverse student body with diverse values and priorities.
    • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in student affairs/student services functions and philosophies.
    • Demonstrated leadership ability and administrative skill.
    • Energy, creativity, organizational skills, tolerance for ambiguity, sense of humor, desire to challenge the status quo, ability to work odd hours and as a team member.
    • Familiar with state and federal law pertaining to higher education, especially relating to student life, student conduct, due process, individual rights, educational records, liability issues, and privacy.
    • High degree of personal/professional integri1y, respect for privacy and confidentiality and a sense of ethics.
    • Knowledge of state and national trends in higher education regarding student conduct, student conduct systems, and processes.
    • Skills and experience in developing proactive and responsive educational programs.
Core CompetenciesStrong organizational and time management skills, ability to set priorities, balance a heavy workload, adhere to a schedule, and meet deadlines.
Skills And AbilitiesCommunication Skills: Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills sufficient to develop, teach, and lead workshops and conduct public presentations using various media formats. Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
Language Skills: Ability to communicate effectively and interact tactfully with all levels of college staff, students, and trustees; read, analyze, and interpret documents, budgets, and contracts; and respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
Reasoning Skills: Ability to: define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Technology: Working knowledge of Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, e-mail, discipline-related software, and Internet or other specific technology-related expertise. Demonstrated computer skills (word processing, database management, presentation programs, and graphic design) sufficient to oversee developing and maintaining a complex and secure database and website.
Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
