Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine is seeking a Phase Director, for Year 2 of the Pre-Clerkship Curriculum. This is a full-time faculty position located on our Stratford, NJ campus. This position is responsible for the development and administration of their respective pre-clerkship curriculum year. They will serve as a resource and mediator on campus for curriculum excellence. Phase Directors implement the curricular plan according to the Curriculum Committee's recommendations and assist faculty in developing their instructional content to ensure the logical sequencing and integration of the curriculum. Phase Directors work closely with the Assessment department in developing and assessing the outcomes of the medical students.
Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesOverall Curricular Support
  • Know curriculum policies and procedures related to pre-clerkship delivery, work to ensure proper implementation and collaborate with others when changes need to be made.
  • Update and maintain standard operating procedures relating to pre-clerkship curriculum delivery.
  • Collaborate with the phase director for year I to evaluate gaps and areas for review longitudinally in SGL Year 1 and SGL Year 2.
  • Actively review and provide feedback in the semester scheduling process, adhering to protocols and standards in collaboration with block directors.
  • Create and update Pre-Clerkship Syllabi template in Rowan-Virtua SOM approved format.
  • Attend and actively participate in all meetings relevant to the curriculum.
  • Prepare and present block sessions in area of expertise.
  • Be available to answer students’ questions about the overall curriculum.
  • Ensure support for student learning through collaboration with the Center for Student Success.
  • Implement guidelines and protocols for standardization and accuracy of the health equity curriculum across years and cohorts.
  • Implement guidelines and actively support the Case-Based Learning (CBL) thread in the SGL curriculum thru attending meetings, providing trainings, reviewing cases, etc.
Overall Block Support
  • Provide guidance and actively on-board new Block Directors.
  • Ensure Block Directors/Administrators are implementing the standards for curricular delivery.
  • Propose and vet block curriculum in collaboration with the Block Director.
  • Conduct quality control review of the Learning Management System (LMS) (Canvas) in a timely manner to ensure accuracy.
  • Coordinate with appropriate designated and recruited faculty to teach basic science and clinical content
  • Ensure each learning session has learning objectives and provide faculty with resources and support in how to do write these.
  • Ensure each learning session is delivered appropriately to the level of the relevant class cohort (eg. SGL II level).
  • Utilize departmental resources to ensure all BIC session learning objectives are mapped and up-to-date.
  • Ensure adequate and varied teaching methods to optimize student mastery of material.
  • Notify the Assistant Dean for Pre-clerkship in a timely manner of additional faculty needs to meet adequate faculty student ratios where applicable.
  • Facilitate access to content experts for additional student questions
  • Collaborate with block directors to evaluate sessions and give constructive feedback to session instructors.
  • Collaborate with block directors to remediate, replace or remove session instructors and content as needed to improve the Block
  • Support the annual post-block review / self-evaluation as required by the Program Evaluation Student Assessment (PESA), review the PESA report and the Course director Report in order to collaboratively determine steps for quality improvement. Providing follow through to ensure completion and implementation of feedback. Attend the Post-Block, Intersession, Course (BIC) meeting and provide support and follow through for Block Directors moving into the next academic year.
Development of Quality Assessments
  • Assist in the development of appropriate and diverse formative and summative assessments in collaboration with the assessment department.
  • Chair and actively participate in all relevant block exam-writing committee meetings.
  • Collect, label, and map exam questions to objectives and learning sessions.
  • Ensure each exam item has appropriate and accurate tagging in ExamSoft.
  • Collaborate with Block Director to prepare block exams and provide final review of each exam prior to delivery.
  • Proctor assessments and exam review sessions as needed.
  • Attend the Post-Exam Analysis meeting as coordinated by the assessment department and complete any required follow up tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.
ReportingThis position reports to the Assistant Dean for Pre-Clerkship Curriculum and will be a key member of the Curriculum staff.
QualificationsThe ideal candidate must have strong leadership skills and be able to lead curriculum and exam development. Applicants must be a DO or MD, with at least five years of medical education and administration experience, with some of that working in a medical school. Experience with course or clerkship direction is essential. The ability to work well with a varied constituency (students, faculty, chairs, staff) is important, as is experience with negotiation. Title will be assigned based on experience.
Experience with diverse populations. Record of respect and openness towards people whose social and cultural background is different from one’s own. Ability to recognize and manage one’s behaviors and communication to create an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming environment within the department/organization.
NOTE: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US. The university will not sponsor an applicant's work visa for this position.
NOTE: This faculty appointment is Tenure Eligible and may be granted upon successful completion of criteria listed in the Rowan-Virtua SOM Faculty Bylaws.
NOTE: Faculty Rank of Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor is pending review and recommendation made by the Faculty Affairs Committee.
