Certified Conductor Job Description

FLSA Status: Full time Hourly, non-exempt

Summary: The Conductor is the head crewmember in charge of the operation and management of the Royal Gorge Route’s passenger train. The Conductor works to keep all passengers, staff, and the train safe at all times. Conductors are also responsible for any emergency events that may arise and all maintenance of the train while it’s underway.

Essential Abilities/Functions-

- Lead and effectively delegate any tasks when required.

- Properly diagnose and remedy/report any mechanical issue.

- Remain calm and collected through various challenging situations.

- Learn and retain education given towards the position’s job duties.

- Comprehend oral and written communications (both general and technical).

- Acquire and maintain the proper paperwork that corresponds to the train’s operation.

- Ensure the necessary function of all the train’s operating components. (lighting, HVAC, water, brakes, safety systems, etc.)

- Effectively communicate to the Engineer any information involved with train movements. (when to depart, stop, relay signal indications, protect shoving movements, etc.)

- Perform all train checks and air brake tests required for train operation.

- Diagnose and remedy/report any mechanical issues found on equipment.

- Work with the 480-volt electrical system to equip the train with the proper power source in a timely manner.

- Provide proper communication regarding whether it is safe to board/disembark the train, if any wildlife is visible to guests, if any abnormal conditions are present, etc.

- Remain open to speaking with guests, answer questions, and discuss the area’s history and scenery.

- Ensure that all guests and employees remain safe while on the train and along the boarding area.

- Handle any urgent/emergency situations that may arise on board while the train is enroute.

- Properly secure and lock the train at the end of daily operations.

- Other associated duties assigned by management.

- Remain subject to random drug/alcohol screening as required by FRA 49 CFR Part 219.

- Attend occasional classroom training and testing to remain compliant with certification.

- Pass random efficiency tests executed by Operations management.

- Execute occasional switch moves with other members of the train crew to reorganize passenger cars within the train/the railroad’s mechanical complex.

Education/Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED/equivalent.
  • Pass pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and background checks.
  • Conductor certification pursuant to 49 CFR Part 242 (Training is provided).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

· Effectively participate in a team environment spanning multiple departments.

· Communicate effectively and positively to staff and passengers.

· Think critically and maintain situational awareness.

· Function well with multitasking.

  • General mechanical experience, previous railroad experience, or previous/current Conductor certification is a plus.
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Pass pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and background checks.
  • Conductor certification pursuant to 49 CFR Part 242 (Training is provided)

Working Conditions

  • Shifts range in length varying from 6 to 12 hours at most.
  • On-Duty times range from pre-sunrise to early evening. Rare situations can arise where shifts extend past midnight.
  • It’s an extreme rarity in which shifts are cancelled due to the weather. Train operations will experience many different types of weather conditions ranging from extreme heat/cold, wind, rain, and heavy snowfall.
  • Train operations consist of traveling to isolated locations, far from civilization where external aid may not be well-reached.

· Commonly lift up to 30 pounds of equipment/material.

· Occasionally lift up to 80 pounds of equipment/material.

· Stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, and balance on uneven surfaces.

· Climb up/down steep steps/ladders.

· Walk long distances along slick/uneven terrain.

· Stand for long periods of time ranging from 4 to 10 hours.

· Work weekends, early morning, nights, and select holidays.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
