A day in the life…
As the Safety, Quality, and Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for all workplace safety and quality related initiatives related to site production, warehousing, and logistic operations. You will be developing, implementing, and monitoring programs to manage and improve workplace safety and product quality. You will be responsible for supporting daily Performance Control System (PCS) reviews related to workplace safety and food safety. You will also support the Corporate FS&Q Manager on related initiatives. You will implement and maintain a variety of occupational health and safety programs related to the safety of our employees. This position will help identify and correct at-risk workplace conditions, ensure compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and ensure training is provided and records are maintained.
What you will be doing…

  • Maintain and implement food safety, quality standards and procedures to meet Russell Stover Standards.
  • Maintain and implement health and safety standards and procedures to meet Russell Stover standards.
  • Verification of quality programs performed by the different departments and individuals at the site.
  • Lead Quality initiatives, and support food safety and quality audits.
  • Conduct process and procedure audits and implement corrective actions to ensure compliance.
  • Perform inspections on packaging materials, semi-finished and finished products, and in case of deviations, lead improvement initiatives, partnering with other departments such as Procurement, Operations, Industrial Performance, Research and Development.
  • Support QA department on meeting all standards and requirements including AIB, FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act), local and federal regulations as well as the industry’s best practices.
  • Maintain systems for all inspection/audit records and ensure all product information remains accurate, complete, consistent, and timely.
  • Document and communicate quality issues, trend analysis, and provide corrective action for the resolution of quality issues.
  • Implement, review, and revise written safety programs and procedures.
  • Perform relevant inspections and audits capturing and delegating necessary countermeasures.
  • Document and maintain regulatory records including incident reports and OSHA Logs.
  • Respond to EHS related incidents and participate in incident investigation.
  • Coach and counsel production employees, supervisors, and managers on improving safety of the work area and of specific required tasks.
  • Identify and manage correction of safety and environmental deficiencies.
  • Maintain an accurate chemical and hazardous materials inventory.
  • Perform Risk Assessments of specific jobs/tasks along with employees/supervision/management on the plant floor, serving as the barometer for rating riskiness of jobs between departments.
  • Recommend countermeasures for risk reduction and collaborate with operating departments to implement them.
  • Administer various safety programs (shoes, hearing testing, Accident follow-up).
  • Deliver Continuous Improvement - Build capability, establish best practices, and use standardized work processes to improve safety performance.
  • Enhance the site capabilities in critical hazard program management, including but not limited to hazardous energy control; fall protection, powered industrial trucks; work permitting.
  • Respond to regulatory requests as needed.

Do you have what it takes?
(Basic Qualifications)

  • BS degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Nutrition, Biology, or related field (Or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Food Safety & Quality experience in a food production environment.
  • 5 years’ experience required in a manufacturing environment.
  • Formal training in basic to intermediary food safety/regulatory, and Preventive Control Certified Individual (PCQI – can be obtained withing 6 months of employment).
  • Working knowledge of regulatory and quality system requirements – Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001), AIB, HACCP, Good Manufacturing Process (GMP).
  • Previous experience implementing occupational safety standards.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications and productivity tools.
  • Understanding of sanitation and related practices.
  • Strong auditing / assessment skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and detail oriented.
  • Functional knowledge of manufacturing operations, and process flow.
  • Knowledge of basic safety standards and how to determine compliance.
  • The role is classified essential on site.

  • Safety. Safety is Russell Stover’s first ingredient. Your safety is important to us, so we provide safety training and protective gear. We also go through an in-depth Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) training on your first day and continue to share safety tips daily.
  • Surroundings. You’ll be working around different machines – Schubert’s, forklifts, electric pallet jacks, and chocolate candy banks/steels.
  • Activity. Some activities may require standing in one place for long periods, walking around, or climbing stairs/ladders, and routinely lift 50 lbs.
  • Temperature. You will be comfortable year-round with our climate-controlled environment. Our temperatures are consistently around 63°F but could fluctuate depending on your specific role.
  • Smell. You will enjoy a variety of deliciously sweet aromas and you may end your day smelling like chocolate!
  • Dress code. Relaxed, with a few rules to follow for food safety, personal safety and in guidance with our good manufacturing practices (GMP). Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are required. Leather, imitation leather, or rubber boots or shoes must be worn in the kitchen and other areas when working around hot liquid/product or hot water.
