Project Engineer – Automotive Conveyor Design

Location: Southfield, MI (with occasional travel to Windsor, ONT, Mexico, and Canada)

Salary: $90,000 - $110,000 annually (including overtime and end-of-year bonuses)

Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Start Date: Early June

Position Overview:

As a Project Engineer, you will oversee all engineering and technical aspects of assigned projects, ensuring the highest level of accuracy and quality. You will work closely with the project manager and superintendent to design, layout, and detail conveyor systems as per customer specifications and Client's bid clarifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support all structural calculations including kip loadings, column, beam, cover plate, and base plate sizing.
  • Collaborate with P.E. for state-certified structural and civil drawings.
  • Perform engineering calculations for drives, shafts, cylinders, and bearings.
  • Create ABMs and work orders for the shop and purchasing; address queries from these departments.
  • Provide input on drawing development and offer technical support to project engineers.
  • Create solutions to technical issues in a timely manner.
  • Check drawings or designate a checker before submission to shop or sub-fabrication sources.
  • Produce AutoCAD conveyor layouts to meet customer JPH requirements.
  • Track project requirements pre- and post-award.
  • Work with project manager on-site as required; attend meetings and perform field checks.
  • Assist project manager and superintendent with quoting additional work requirements.
  • Maintain an updated task list for ongoing projects and those handled by your team.
  • Provide chain pulls on CP Plus with drive balancing and drive dropout capability as per customer requirements.
  • Supply FMEA and FEA documentation to external sources as needed.
  • Stay updated with customer specifications and revisions.
  • Train and monitor less experienced engineers and selected engineering sub-contractors.
  • Offer start-up assistance to project manager and superintendent.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5 years of automotive conveyor design experience, or non-degreed with 5 years of experience.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Inventor, with a preference for experience in larger scale, automotive conveyor projects.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in high-pressure environments, identifying scope changes and creating detailed change order requests.

  • Flexible hybrid schedule with the opportunity to work from home.
  • Occasional overtime, including potential for 5-10 hours per week and weekend or late-night work.
