Position Title: Dean of Students, Middle School
Department: Middle School (6-8)
Reports To: P-8 Assistant Principal of Student Life
FLSA Classification: Exempt
FTE (Full-Time Equivalent): 100%
Schedule of Duties: 11-Month
Salary: $110,000- $155,000 annual/salary depending on level of education and experience
Position Purpose: The Middle School Dean of Students oversees all aspects of student comportment and safety. The Dean of Students is responsible for implementing a comprehensive and age-appropriate discipline program, ensuring student safety at school, and arranging adequate supervision throughout the school day. In order to accomplish this, the Dean of Students must work closely with faculty, members of the Administrative Team, as well as individual students and their families.
Specific Expectations for P-8 Faculty & Staff: In addition to regular teaching responsibilities (including but not limited to preparing curriculum and grade reporting, class prep, student reporting report card narratives, parent-teacher conferences, supervision duties, classroom substitution, advisory, elective teaching, office hours, outdoor education/field trips, etc.), the following duties and responsibilities are required as part of the P-8 faculty/staff workload: Responsibilities beyond the boundaries of teaching assignments that foster a growth mindset in order to continually improve our P-8 program such as professional development and trainings, attendance of or participation in, mandatory meetings and/or events (Directors Days, Open Houses, accreditation meetings, etc.) are required as directed by your supervisor. All employees will be paid appropriately and according to current law. If staff are required to work outside of regular work schedule, permission to work outside of the regular work schedule is required; non-exempt employees will receive overtime pay, as eligible.
Essential Functions
Deep understanding of and ability to cite the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools and the Student Handbook.
Deep understanding of and ability to cite all school policies and procedures and assists in their articulation and enforcement across all campus constituencies.
Responsible for articulating and implementing the School rules developed per the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools, best practices, and the principles of restorative justice.
Counsels, disciplines, and supports students in connection with School policies and regulations.
Works with grade level associate deans and teaching teams to resolve grade level disciplinary issues, including implementing consequences that involve personal and community responsibility.
Counsels teachers on matters of classroom, campus, and student discipline.
Creates, distributes, and oversees Student Behavior plans, as needed.
Directs discipline in a constructive, consistent, and fair manner that is aligned with Restorative Justice.
Supervises detention (including Saturday Detention), as needed.
Establishes and keeps current easily accessible student discipline records.
Chairs the Discipline Review Board.
Collaborates with the School Counselors, Director of Mission & Culture, and Grade Level Associate Deans to implement the Middle School Advisory program.
Works closely with the Principal, Assistant Principals, School Counselors, Directors of Learning Service and involved faculty and staff regarding student issues.
Consults and collaborates with School Counselors to address the needs of and provide support to students/families in crisis.
Consults parents on matters related to student behavior, performance, and well-being.
Works with the Assistant Principal of Student Life to review and revise policies and regulations governing student discipline.
Coordinates logistics for - and attends - co-curricular activities such as field trips/Outdoor Ed trips, fun nights and dances, and other special events such as plays/musical performances, etc.
Oversees Pick-up and Drop-off areas daily, including faculty assigned to related duties.
Oversees the new-student orientation.
Responsible for regularly monitoring all common student areas during the academic day, including supervising lunch and breaks.
Manages the supervision and duty schedule to ensure student safety.
Leads team of Grade Level Associate Deans and schedules relevant meetings with other administrators as needed.
Directly supervises the Student Support Team.
Works with the Director of Operations and others to coordinate and conduct the required Emergency Preparedness Drills (Fire, Earthquake, Evacuation Drills, etc.).
Additional
Support the school and its leadership.
Perform additional duties assigned by the Principal and Assistant Principal of Student Life.
Actively uphold and model the Personal and Professional Formation Practices based on our Goals & Criteria.
Qualifications
BA degree in related subject matter, counseling and/or educational administration.
A minimum of 2 years of administration experience in a school environment.
A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the school as articulated in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools. Actively uphold and model personal and professional behavior based on our Goals & Criteria.
Fluency in reading, writing and speaking in English.
Excellent verbal and written skills, as well as outstanding interpersonal skills.
Excellent computer skills on both PC and Apple platforms.
Demonstrated ability to work well with lower/middle school students and with adult colleagues.
Willingness to be an active, enthusiastic member of the SHS community and the LMS administrative team.

Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Regularly sit, talk, hear and interact with students, parents, staff and visitors.
Works in a highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
Must be able to regularly move safely and comfortably over a 64-acre campus.
May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office environment.
Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
