Saint John's Episcopal Church is Hiring an Assistant Near Laurel, MS

About Saint Johns: Saint John’s is a parish church established in Laurel, Mississippi in 1894 in the Anglican tradition of the Episcopal Church. Our worship is to the Glory of God and sacramentally centered in the celebration of the Eucharistic Sacrifice of Jesus. Saint John’s is the only Episcopal/Anglican Church in Jones County and our parish family is comprised of faithful from Laurel, Ellisville, Bay Springs, Moselle, Soso and all over Jones County and we seek to meet the spiritual needs of this diverse county. We are a church family of persons married and single; young and old; rich and poor; liberal and conservative, our common goal and greatest bond is to follow Christ Jesus, worship God in His Holy Church, and to sacrificially give, work and pray for the spread of His Kingdom.

Job Purpose: to assist the rector in the fulfilling of his duties including:

  • Communications with the parish- including emails, texts, and printed publications.
  • Greeting parishioners, guests and visitors and being courteous and helpful, including emails, phone calls, texts and in-person visits.
  • Supporting the rector in his work as chairman of the vestry, which will include preparing for the monthly meetings and gathering any required information or reports.
  • Supporting the rector in his Diocesan roles of: Convocation Dean, Chairman of Examining Chaplains, and the Committee on Theology and Ethics.
  • Communication, organization and support for the various ministries and guilds. A few examples would include: Organizing and communicating needs and personnel for the Liturgical guild, or providing support and resources for our Sunday School teachers.
  • Responsibilities in providing backup to the financial secretary managing parish finances and paying weekly and monthly bills.
  • Communicating and overseeing repairs and maintenance at the parish- an example would be seeing a water heater gets replaced, working with the rector to arrange repair, and then following through with the plumber to see the completion of the work.
  • Helping to manage and produce content for social media, including gaining understanding of livestream platform, email interface, and understanding the workings of Youtube, Instagram, and Facebook.
  • Supporting the rector in his role at Saint John’s Day School, which will include livestreaming, content creation, and leading the Wednesday chapel worship. The assistant will also be expected to help the rector be ready and prepared for monthly board meetings.

Particulars about the position of Assistant to the Rector:

  • Part-time position looking at 20hrs/week. Example would be Monday- Thursday 8am-1pm. The hours/days are flexible as long as the purpose of the assistant role is carried out and agreed upon with the rector.
  • Starting wage: $19/hr. for an estimated annual salary of $20,000.
  • Assistant will need to be prepared to gain a working knowledge of Microsoft office, Adobe Creative Suite, and other computing interfaces such as Wordpress, MailChimp, Simpletext, and others. It is not expected that the person would possess this knowledge beforehand, but that they have an attitude to learn, explore and be curious.
  • This position is an extension of the ministry of the rector and therefore the assistant will need to interact with others in a pastoral/professional manner and in a way that doesn’t compromise the work of the rector.
  • The assistant will need discretion- they will many times be involved in delicate situations that are confidential, and other times will see people at their lowest who lack the ability to be kind or well mannered… so on top of being pleasant, they will need to be able to detach themselves emotionally from certain exchanges… or have thick skin when required.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $20,000.00 - $25,000.00 per year
