What You’ll Do:

The ML teacher provides direct language instruction to multilingual learner students that serve as a powerful lever to increase English proficiency, academic language acquisition, and student achievement.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Teaches English language development pull-out classes to multilingual students of all proficiency levels that are aligned to WIDA Can-Do Descriptors, Common Core Standards, and provide students with rigorous opportunities to engage in critical thinking and language learning in all domains.
  • Teaches at the New Liberty Innovation School in Salem, and supports other district schools as needed based on student data.
  • Pushes into and co-teaches general ed Humanities, math, or science classes daily.
  • Leverages extensive knowledge of first and second language acquisition in planning and collaborating with general education teaching colleagues.
  • Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of native and non-native speakers who are learning content in English.
  • Promotes a positive classroom environment that celebrates the diversity of the student population and fosters a love of learning.
  • Provides structure in the classroom by promoting a positive classroom environment that is conducive to learning for students of all backgrounds and language proficiency levels.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to excellence, equity, and high expectations for all students by building on the strengths that students bring to the language learning process.
  • Communicates regularly and proactively with parents and families in a culturally proficient manner,
  • Evaluates each student's formative progress in English skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and prepares progress reports.
  • Serves as an advocate for the needs of multilingual students in instructional teams,
  • Work under the general supervision of the building principal to review student proficiency levels, appropriate English language services, and multilingual data.
  • Co-teaches a daily 30-minute advisory class/morning meeting.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required) Masters Degree preferred
  • Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in ESL 6-12 
  • Secondary license in ELA, history, or Special Education, also preferred
  • Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
  • Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement (Required within 1-year of start date)
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience and working in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred.
  • Proven track record of raising student achievement scores in an urban/turnaround environment highly desired.
  • Proficiency with technology (blended learning, teacher/family communication suites (Remind preferred), Google G-Suite Apps, etc.) desirable.
  • Second language (Spanish and/or Portuguese) proficiency a plus
  • Bilingual candidates and candidates of color strongly encouraged to apply
  • Current authorization to work in the United States

Reports to: ML Director and School Principals

Work Year: Teachers in Salem Public Schools work a 185 day school year (180 student contact days plus 5 professional development days. Please visit www.salemk12.org to view the 2023-24 district and/or school calendar.

Salary: Teacher salaries in the Salem Public Schools are determined by the Salem Teachers Union collective bargaining agreement. Salary information can be found in Appendix A.
