Purpose Statement

The Student Support Assistant (Student Supervision) provides support to the educational mission of the school and department administrators in a safe and efficient manner. This position requires professional judgment. The individual in this role will be primarily responsible for a supervision of a sole student but may be asked to assist with other tasks and responsibilities in this job description, based on the need of the school.

This position reports to the Principal or Administrative Designee.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Ability to pass a fingerprint and criminal background check
2. Speak, read, write, and present professionally, analyze, and interpret English written and verbal communications
3. Adaptability and understanding of cultural differences and in working in a diverse environment
4. Ability to follow safety practices
5. Flexibility to handle changing work priorities

Preferred Qualifications

1. Job related experience
2. Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand
3. Ability to lead, guide, and coordinate people and projects
4. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records using a variety of technology systems
5. Strong problem-solving skills
6. Knowledge of child development and ability to identify and adapt directives to students of all ages

Essential Functions

1. Supervise student/s during non-academic activities to ensure students are behaving appropriately and are safe
2. Promote a positive environment to prepare student/s for learning
3. Be proactive in identifying, addressing, and bringing to the attention of the administrator any potential safety concerns
4. Assist assigned student/s in playground and when outdoors, including having the ability to be outdoors, walk around, respond quickly to break up scuffles, etc.
5. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders.
6. Supervise and monitor student/s during non-academic activities (e,g, classroom, library, playground, bus boarding, escorting to lunchrrom, etc.) to ensure student/s are behaving appropriately and are safe
7. Promote a positive environment to prepare student/s for learning
8. Be proactive in identifying, addressing, and bringing to the attention of the administrator any potential safety concerns
9. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements effectively and efficiently
10. As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 25 pounds.
11. Other duties as assigned.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
