EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE :
  • AA degree or higher preferred but not required.
  • Three years of demonstrated experience as a supervisor in a retail environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cash controls, accounting, cashier procedures, scheduling, and hiring.

  • If employee owns their own vehicle, must possess current auto insurance for instances in which a personal vehicle is used on TSA time or business. TSA adheres to the federal standards regarding mileage reimbursement.
  • Comfort with and ability to operate a 20' box truck and forklift.
SOFTWARE-RELATED SKILLS :
  • POS, cash register skills required.
  • Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  • Ability to use new software programs with basic training.
  • Ability to research online and access cloud data storage systems.
SCOPE OF POSITION :
Directs the activities of the retail store to ensure maximum revenues, effectiveness, and profitability. Accountable for customer satisfaction and employee morale. Hire, develop, train and lead Retail Team. Responsible for creating and maintaining store Organization Chart with job responsibilities/assignments; supervision of store staff in daily responsibilities of meeting daily goals; merchandise organization, production, customer service, and sales while maintaining a clean organized retail setting. The Store Manager will be responsible for all daily activities in the store and warehouse and report directly to District Store Manger.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Responsible for achieving sales budgets while balancing store operational expenses as projected by fiscal year budget goals. Maintain and post monthly goal projections/actual sales revenue, including recycling, eCommerce, etc. Communicate objectives in a clear, concise manner that engages all staff and volunteers. Lead, coach and mentor store team in the methods and tools that will enable every individual member the opportunity to participate and achieve the goals and standards expected for a successful team operation.
Personnel
  • The Store Manager (SM) will be responsible for development and application of Operations Organizational Chart to support regular defined schedule as well as daily and weekly staffing assignments to further identify expectations for all employees and ensure all operational responsibilities are maintained or improved. Supervise and coach all staff in performance of duties to ensure compliance with published Org chart, directives, and guidelines, including dress policy, purchasing procedures, cell phone use, timecard reporting.
  • The SM is responsible for maintaining appropriate staffing levels. Interviewing and hiring new employees with the objective of developing a team environment that fosters the development of high operational standards. Select, train, coach, and schedule personnel (employees, work program participants and volunteers) to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Provide ongoing training and coaching for new and existing personnel (paid & volunteer) on store policies and procedures and maintain or exceed the level of customer service expected by The Salvation Army. Convey clear, concise communication with specific direction to ensure understanding and expectations.
  • The SM will provide regularly scheduled monthly staff meetings with all personnel to present consistent communication to help achieve the goals and drive sales. Seek open dialogue for staff suggestions and recommendations for improving operations. Monthly meeting notes with summary and discussion notes should be kept on file with management access after each meeting.
  • The SM will monitor due dates and provide specific written input regarding annual evaluations/reviews of employees and evaluation of trainees as needed from referring agencies. Store manager to submit annual reviews in proper format at least two weeks in advance of due date for CFC review. Administer disciplinary action, as needed, in accordance with TSA policies and procedures using progressive discipline guidelines.
  • The SM shall ensure that all staff and volunteers will be thoroughly orientated in safety and accident policy and procedures as outlined in The Salvation Army Employee Handbook. Ensure a safe working and shopping environment. Monitor safe operation of TSA property and equipment. Instruct safety training and instill proper safety attitudes within the store. Responsible for timely accident reporting and adherence to the TSA safety program, OSHA and IIPP compliance, as well as store policies including dress policy, cell phone use, purchase policy, etc.
General Responsibilities
  • The SM will provide quarterly documentation to support the pricing of merchandise using other thrift stores in the community as a comparison. All employees must complete comparative shopping research to ensure competitive prices in the thrift store. Adjust to effectively remain viable in the area marketplace. Quarterly report that details stores visited by employees, observations and ideas gleaned from visits including pricing, seasonal displays, and trends, notated and reviewed at monthly meetings. Copy to Divisional Manager and Retail Director.
  • The SM will make every effort to manage the store operation within the Divisional guidelines. Expenses should be monitored daily, especially employee hours. These guidelines serve as the basis for sound fiscal management in order that the store may generate income that supports total operations.
  • The SM will be responsible for the handling of the store sales income daily to include uniform procedures for: all types of cash, charge, check, and voucher transactions; daily sales report documentation, bank deposits and cash/check donations. Daily sales will be recorded on the shared drive every night during the closing operation.
  • The SM will implement the store Organizational Chart with defined schedule and hours to always provide appropriate coverage in showroom and production to ensure showroom will be operated at a high standard, production will meet or exceed daily goals and excellent customer service will be achieved. The SM must be cross trained in all store positions and able to cover any open shifts to ensure full coverage. The SM must also assist in any given position during busy periods or periods of high volume (ex. cashiering, stocking, etc.) The SM is responsible for being present Friday and Saturday and alternate opening/closing of the operation.
  • The SM will be responsible for ensuring the opening and closing procedures for the store are completed and assigned. The store manager will conduct daily briefings/huddles to outline the day's objectives and resolve issues and discuss previous days' sales results.
  • The SM will delegate the arrangement for seasonal shopping and merchandise availability on a continuing basis. Clothing racks and other fixtures are to be stocked with current merchandise.
  • The SM will ensure the frequent changing and upgrading of all store displays, ensuring that all floor stock is attractively organized and frequently rearranged to cultivate customer interest. Optimize visual merchandising zones surrounding entry of store that establishes initial impression of guests.
  • All clothing will have dated & color-coded tagging. Clothing will be discounted in the final week and "ragged out" and recycled in a timely manner at the end of the turn cycle.
  • The SM is authorized to reduce prices on any DONATED item that has been on the floor for the designated minimum period. Items should not be discounted beyond the published cycle without the Store Manager's approval.
  • Responsible for achieving daily production goals, ensuring a trained member of the store management/leadership team has checked all merchandise against TSA quality standards prior to sending to the sales floor.
  • Attends scheduled manager meetings, video conferences and communicates regularly with all personnel to keep team informed of new policies and directives.
  • Assures that safety measures are established and maintained consistent with TSA safety program, IIPP compliance policy and OSHA regulations and for reporting all hazards to management.
  • Responsible for the protection of property and building, including safety and proactive maintenance program.
  • Any other tasks/responsibilities necessary for the successful operation of the Retail Thrift Store operations including vehicle management.
  • Other written or verbal duties may be assigned by management.
Maintenance/Custodial
  • The SM will ensure proper safety, cleanliness, care and maintenance of the retail sales floor, production area, building in general, vehicles, and all restrooms. All staff should be assigned specific duties and should be monitored in weekly review format as defined in store management required reporting.
  • The SM will ensure that monthly safety inspections are conducted in accordance with Salvation Army Policy immediately notifying management of any deficiencies and corrective action taken.
  • Maintain department supply inventory lists and order replacement supplies as necessary to perform daily operations.
Customer/Community Relations
  • The SM is responsible for ensuring that store associates and supervisors positively acknowledge and treat all customers in a courteous manner.
  • The SM is responsible for ensuring that all staff/workers are treated with the same respect and fairness while working in the store.
  • Customer complaints will be handled in a professional manner by all staff. The SS should personally handle complaints about the sales floor and immediately notify the Manager of the facts surrounding the complaint and the disposition thereof.
  • Designate time to be present in local community organizations, including TSA Corps, as a representative of the Salvation Army Retail Thrift Store, building relationships and understanding within the community.
  • Develop community-based programs to increase the activities at the retail thrift store to include events like book readings, craft events, gallery nights or similar outreach events.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, clothing carts, merchandise carts, rolling clothing racks, fixtures, furniture dollies, platform trucks and carts, hand trucks and miscellaneous carts.

THE STORE MANAGER DRESS CODE IS AS FOLLOWS :
Be neatly groomed with clean, pressed clothing. Shoes must be appropriate business casual. Name badge or lanyard with title required. These guidelines are subject to change at any time.

Life and Voluntary Options. An employer-paid life insurance policy covers employees. Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.
Retirement Plans: Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at five years eligible service time. Plus, an employee-funded voluntary 403(b) option.
Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.
Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months' service time.
Paid Vacation:
  • Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions.
  • Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions.
  • Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months' service time.
