**Scope of Position:** The cook is responsible for planning, making and serving safe, nutritious meals as well as making the facility a safe and secure place for all the men, women, and children who are in our facility. You will treat all those receiving shelter/services with dignity and understanding, you will work to implements the rules of the facility fairly and equitably. Any special or unusual concern is to be brought to the immediate attention of the supervisor. As part of the bigger picture you will be available to help out wherever needs in other departments arise.

**Education and Work Experience**:

- Education: Education and/or work experience commensurate with the duties and responsibilities required. Must obtain a Food Handlers Card and be responsible for following all guidelines of the food handlers manual.

- Work/Professional Experience: Experience in cooking or working in an institutional kitchen preferred. Must be familiar with cooking from scratch as there are very few convenience foods used. The use of kitchen equipment. Able to fill out needed paperwork.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required**: The ability to maintain a self-motivated and self-directed schedule. Able to address multiple projects in a time-sensitive manner. Ability to operate commercial grills, ovens fryers, slicers, blenders and other kitchen industrial dishwasher related tools. Ability to speak and read the English language. The individual must show respect for other employees, associates, clients, and the goals and objectives of The Salvation Army. Have a good understanding of kitchen health codes. Must obtain a Food Handlers Card.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Maintain ongoing professional relationship in all interpersonal contacts and relay all pertinent information concerning clients to appropriate staff member. (Note: Confidentiality Requirements).

- Collaborate with other cooks in maintenance of food preparation area for compliance with health standards. Collaborate with other cook in preparation of weekly menus.

- Collaborate with Assistant Director and other cooks in preparation of weekly menus.

- Prepare meals and/or coordinate meal preparation for meals as necessary.

- Responsible for planning, coordinating and preparing a daily variety of balanced and nutritious meals that are appealing to the eye and palate.

- Responsible for maintaining inventory of pantry, which includes preparing orders and stocking of food, food service and cleaning supplies.

- Maintain kitchen tools and equipment in good condition and in accordance with OSHA regulations.

- Responsible to see that no food, supplies or materials will be distributed outside of standard meals without prior approval from Administration.

- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., occasionally lift, move, or carry materials up to 200 lbs. with assistance and physically able to do a lot of bending, twisting, stooping & climbing stairs, walking over uneven surfaces, use of ladders. May include occasional offensive odors. Ability to grasp with hands and fingers. Possible exposure to communicable diseases.

- Responsible for the cleaning of the kitchen and the Dining room

- Collaborate with other cooks and the DVD in inventory of pantry and maintenance to comply with health standards.

- Responsible for training, directing and hygiene of all kitchen volunteers.

- Maintain good relations with outside service groups.

- Relay all pertinent information concerning clients to administration or to appropriate staff member.

- Assist with accepting in-kind donations, keeping a log of their receipt, issuing a tax receipt to donors and giving receipt copy to Administration.

- Keep all records up to date. Fill out all daily duties list.

- Provide inside and outside security and safety of the building, as well as the clients.

- Performs security and fire watches both inside and outside of the building as needed.

- Participate as a member of the Vets Center Safety Committee, according to OSHU regulations.

- Must remain awake at all times while on the job for the safety and security of the clients.

- Know and enforce facility policy and procedures.

**Physical Requirements**: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., occasionally lift, move, or carry materials up to 200 lbs. with assistance and physically able to do a lot of bending, twisting, stooping & climbing stairs, standing on feet for long periods of time.

**Working Conditions:** While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hand to finger, hand, or feel objects, tools, or controls; to talk or hear; reach with hands and arms; stand, bend squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. Work outdoors occasionally, sometimes in inclement weather.

Works on many projects at once with interruptions and noise from ringing telephones, and walk-in traffic, multiple deadlines, and competing priorities. Frequent phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused, or frustrated.

Organizes projects, sets priorities, calculates, catalogues, inspects, analyzes, plans, comprehends, and cooperates with others, etc.

Work with minimum supervision and work involves a high degree of independence. May be required to make independent decisions that may involve unique or unusual situations and/ or complex issues and dealing with demanding requests and / or timelines.

**MISCELLANEOUS:**
