Samish Indian Nation is Hiring a Remote Natural Resources Technician III-Hybrid Remote

The Natural Resources Technician III will report to the Natural Resources Manager and will work closely with project partners, scientific organizations, and local jurisdictions on Natural Resources issues as directed. The Department is tasked with preserving, enhancing, and restoring Natural Resources relevant to the Tribe. The Tech III position has progressively more responsibility and duties than the Tech II position, and will demonstrate higher levels of independence and project leadership.

Principle Duties
  • Coordinates and works with Natural Resources Manager and other staff on Tribal Natural Resources projects and issues
  • Conducts and reviews field data collection, research and analysis with primary work in outdoor environments
  • Provides compilation analysis and report construction utilizing collected data
  • Presents project findings in public venues and forums
  • Completes projects and reports with demonstrated independence in a timely manner and consistently communicates when assistance is needed to remove barriers to completion
  • Assumes Project Lead role when delegated by Manager
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of the GIS/data management system for the department and tribal projects as identified
  • Works independently and accurately in an area of frequent interruptions and as part of a multi-tasked environment
  • Assists in the process of grant writing and grant reports as directed
  • Maintain field supplies and equipment repair inventories to ensure ample supplies and the equipment are in good working order
  • Organizes and cleans equipment as directed from field supervisor in a timely manner upon returning from field so that it is ready for next project
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Must possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, or related field and a minimum of two years directly related experience; experience can be considered as a substitute for education
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of climate issues and how they relate to a changing environment
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs and work with database manager to develop and maintain databases in MS Access or similar relational database software
  • Ability to communication information verbally and in written form in a clear, concise, accurate, and professional manner
  • Must have excellent record-keeping and organizational skills to assure timely and accurate submission of reports, grant requests, budgets, and other time-sensitive materials
  • Initiate and maintain positive, respectful working relationships with Tribal staff to foster a team environment. Initiate and maintain positive working relationships with all outside organizations
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information received orally, through data collection or in document handling
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to meet the minimum insurance requirements regarding driving record in order to utilize GSA vehicles
  • Must have valid WA Boaters Certification and have completed the U.S. Power Squadron training or equivalent within the first six months of employment
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of active field work
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Frequent walking, hiking, standing (40% of time); Frequent bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting, carrying, and pushing (30% of time); Regular periods of sitting, including driving (30% of time). Regularly lifts/carries up to 50lbs. Must possess manual dexterity sufficient to use office and field equipment with frequent repetitive motion such as writing, typing, paperwork-handling, and phone use. Must be able to physically utilize vehicles and water vessels of various sizes including boats, kayaks, or zodiacs. Mental/Visual Demands: Frequent mental and/or visual attention to task is required. Occasionally work requires heavy concentration. Frequent interruptions. Tasks involve eye-hand coordination. Working Environment: Work environment is mainly outdoors with various elements and inclement weather including wind, rain, sleet, cold, and heat. Unavoidable hazards/risks: Work requires frequent vehicular travel and frequent field work including land and bodies of water. May handle chemicals, solutions, and samples on a regular basis. Protective equipment and clothing may be required (goggles, gloves, masks, boots, PFDs, etc.)
