Maintenance Machinist - Streets Division - SF Municipal Transportation Agency (7332)

Salary range: $107,744 - $130,754

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Streets Division of the SFMTA which oversees Parking and Curb Management is working on the upgrade and replacement of 28,000 parking meters citywide involving changes in operating procedures and the additional and/or modification of signage. Parking meters are an integral tool used to mitigate traffic congestion, in support of Muni and our Transit First Policy, by managing parking demand. The project requires the support of a Maintenance Machinist to perform duties within the Operations Unit Parking Meter Shop.

Under general direction, the Maintenance Machinist performs preventive, routine and emergency maintenance and repair of a variety of heavy and light equipment, related systems, and components. This involves supporting Operations Unit trouble shooting and servicing specialty equipment.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties:

  • Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools, stationary as well as portable manual machine tools and Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machine tools such as mills, lathes, drills, saws, etc.
  • Rebuilds, refinishes, modifies and/or fabricates replacement parts for pumps, generators, cranes, parking meters, transit vehicles/railway coaches and railway cars, fire alarm boxes, compressors, dredges, pipes lines, barges, ferry terminals and their components.
  • Maintains and repairs a variety of instruments and mechanical equipment, including valves, castings, and various metal parts.
  • Diagnoses, installs, inspects, and tests machinery, parts and equipment.
  • Communicates and works with staff, supervisors, and external contacts to identify and resolve problems.
  • Reads and interprets schematic drawings, blueprints, and plans.
  • Prepares and maintains records and forms documenting work performed.
  • Dismantles and dissembles/assembles light and heavy machines including parking meters and/or equipment.
  • Manufactures, fabricates, welds parts based on samples and drawings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Nature of Work:

Involves exposure to adverse physical and working conditions and lifting and/or moving objects weighing in excess of seventy (70) pounds. Requires operating equipment and elevated work platforms with the ability to climb or work at elevated heights. Incumbents will be required to work varying hours and/or shifts, including weekends, evening, and holidays in a 24 hour/7 days-a week operation. May involve traveling in areas not considered desirable and/or safe; may be exposed to hazardous environments.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Completion of a recognized four (4) year Machinist's apprenticeship program and two (2) years of fulltime verifiable experience as a journey-level Maintenance Machinist performing duties equivalent to Job Code 7332 Maintenance Machinist (with primary responsibility in maintenance/repair and machine tool operations) OR
  2. A combination of trade-related training (certificate program or military training program) and fulltime verifiable experience as a journey-level Maintenance Machinist performing duties equivalent to Job Code 7332 Maintenance Machinist (with primary responsibility in maintenance/repair and machine tool operations) totaling six (6) years.
  3. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California driver license.

Notes on experience:

A. Trade-related training refers to programs such as machine tool technology program.

B. Experience solely as a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist, Numerical Control (NC) Machinist or Machine Operator (without Manual Maintenance Machinist experience) will not be considered as qualifying.

Substitution:

Completion of a CA Division of Apprenticeship Standards recognized Maintenance Machinist apprenticeship program as evidenced by issuance of a Certificate of Completion of the apprenticeship program under the appropriate authority will substitute for the six (6) years combined work experience.

Desirable Qualifications:

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.

  • Experience applying shop theory and bench work such as turning, milling both manual and CNC, chipping, sawing, filing, drilling, welding (Metal inert gas (MIG), tungsten inert gas (TIG), stick and gas welding), soldering, gear cutting, threading, grinding and heavy treatment, and plasma cutting.
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment including hydraulically, electrically and pneumatically operated machinery; basic composition, characteristics and uses of shop metals and materials and safety practices.
  • Experience in reading/modifying schematic drawings, blueprints and doing layout work; understanding and interpreting the designs and measurements indicated on blueprint, equipment, or parts specifications reading and performing the required procedures in operating, instruction, and service manuals.
  • Experience in using tools and equipment for working on concrete pavement and subbasements.
  • Experience with and ability to use computer-aided design(CAD).
  • Experience working in diverse teams at diverse communities.
