Civic & Environmental Advocacy
As the fourth oldest humane society in the U.S. and the founders of the No-Kill movement, the SF SPCA has been at the forefront of animal welfare for 150+ years. We are always looking for passionate, animal-loving professionals to join our family. We are a true collaborative community of top-ranked experts, supporting staff and volunteers who come together in our world-class facilities to save lives. We're passionate about making sure homeless animals find loving homes and all animals get the care they deserve. If these animals are injured, sick, or behaviorally challenged, we will do everythi...ng we can to help them. OUR HISTORY IS SAVING ANIMALS In 1868, Banker James Sloan Hutchinson caught sight of two men dragging a terrified hog along the rough cobblestone street in San Francisco. Appalled, Hutchinson stepped in to stop the cruelty and rescue the hog. The incident crystallized Hutchinsons concern over widespread animal abuse, and he soon rallied 15 like-minded citizens to found the San Francisco SPCA. Today we are a mighty presence in the animal welfare community. Our vision is about creating a community where pets can live their best lives. Where animals not only have loving homes, but also access to medical care and the best welfare. We ask ourselves: How can we improve the quality of life for cats and dogsand the people who love them?
