San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District is Hiring a RESERVE FIREFIGHTER (VOLUNTEER) Near San Ramon, CA
About The Reserve Firefighter ProgramThe District's Reserve Firefighter Program is a dynamic and challenging program designed to create a pool of highly trained, volunteer Reserve Firefighters who will be capable of assisting the District's full-time personnel in meeting the operational needs of the District. It is an excellent program for candidates who are committed to pursuing a Fire Service career.
Reserve Firefighters will work under the guidance and supervision of the District's full-time personnel and will receive training in accordance with state training requirements for Firefighter I and Emergency Care (Basic First Aid and EMT-D). Please note that the District's training will only augment the skills development for these certifications. It will not provide Reserve Firefighters with Firefighter I or EMT certifications.
The Reserve Firefighters will provide hands-on support to the District in appropriately limited risk capacities, including responding to emergencies when required. Reserve Firefighters can expect to provide support to the District's Suppression crews for the following types of incidents: structure fires, wildland fires, medical emergencies, hazardous conditions, and public service assists.
The Reserve Firefighters will also provide support in a variety of other capacities, such as equipment maintenance, hose testing, station maintenance, and Fire Prevention activities (parades, public education, community events).
To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily for the level of participation to which the Reserve is categorized. Examples Of Duties
- Participates in non-emergency station activities, station and apparatus maintenance and District training as appropriate.
- Responds to the scenes of emergency calls as an extra member of a regular operational crew and performs skills from basic observation to skilled tasks as appropriate.
- Safely drives and operates the District support apparatus for which they are licensed and trained.
- Participates in public education demonstrations and activities.
- Participates in the District's physical fitness program.
- Participates in proficiency training to develop and maintain emergency skills at the Reserve level to which they are categorized.
- Provides supplemental staffing for Station 37.
- Fire department operations, such as: rescue, Incident Command System (ICS), fire protection equipment and systems, fire behavior, hazardous materials.
- Emergency medical procedures and techniques from Emergency Medical Responder (EMR - basic First Aid) to Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P) in accordance with California Title 22.
- Local geographical response factors.
- Correct English grammar, spelling, punctuation.
- Basic mathematics.
- Chemistry and physics of fire behavior and hazardous materials.
- Safety practices and procedures.
- React quickly and calmly in emergencies to maintain personal safety while effecting safe, efficient, and effective operations.
- Perform emergency medical techniques and procedures, appropriate for the participant's level of training.
- Follow proper procedures and instructions in the performance of assigned duties, both in emergency and non-emergency conditions.
- Operate, maintain, and inspect vehicles, apparatus, and equipment, appropriate for the participant's licensing and level of training.
- Clean and maintain fire station and grounds.
- Participate in public education demonstrations and activities.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Relate positively and effectively with those contacted in the course of work.
- Develop familiarization with the District, including local conditions, locations, and applicable state and county regulations.
About The DistrictThe San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District is an independent Special District in Contra Costa County responsible for providing a high level of emergency and non-emergency services to the communities it serves. The District's service area encompasses approximately 155 square miles, serving the communities of Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo, San Ramon, the southern boundary of Morgan Territory, and the Tassajara Valley. The communities are primarily residential, commercial, office park, and controlled manufacturing protected by 10 stations, 155 employees, and 47 volunteers. Financial oversight and strategic policy direction are provided by an elected 5-member Board of Directors.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must possess a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or a high school proficiency certificate.
- Must possess a valid California Driver's License. Maintenance of a valid California driver's license is required as a condition of employment.
- Must possess a valid CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test issued after 2022 ) by time of appointment.
- Must live within the District or within 15 miles of the District boundaries.
- Must be able to meet the minimum monthly required training for the program - (1) One 3-hour drill and (1) One 10-hour ride-along.
- Associate of Science Degree, or other advanced degree, in Fire Science or related educational field.
- Firefighter/EMS course work.
- Firefighter I certification (California State Fire Marshal or National).
- EMT certification.
- Paramedic certification.
- CPR certification.
- California Driver's License with a Firefighter Endorsement.
- Volunteer fire-related experience.
Must maintain a positive attitude and must demonstrate a willingness to learn and the ability to follow instructions. Must also understand and demonstrate the ability to work within the chain-of-command.
