Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute is dedicated to recruiting the best scientists across various disciplines, including cancer biology, neurobiology, immunobiology, and biology of development, regeneration, and aging. Leveraging the Prebys Center, the Institute’s unique state-of-the-art drug discovery and chemical biology center with a wealth of in-house data, we emphasize translating our basic research findings towards improving interventions against human diseases.
SummaryThe Human Resources Business Partner provides HR guidance, analyzes metrics, investigates and resolves employee relations issues, and works with management to improve work relationships and productivity with the assigned internal clients. Responsible for a wide range of disciplines across the employee lifecycle, including but not limited to onboarding, performance management, employee engagement compensation, and offboarding. Works closely with assigned internal clients to improve working relationships, build morale, and increase employee productivity and retention.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Works with legal and management to investigate and resolve complex employee relation’s issues, and leads workplace investigations.
  • Guides management on day-to-day HR topics, performance management, employee development, and best organizational practices.
  • Updates existing job descriptions to adequately reflect assigned job duties. Oversees the development of new job descriptions.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with leaders and team members to achieve organizational goals.
  • Works closely with management and employees to improve working relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and retention.
  • Analyzes trends and metrics in partnership with the HR team to develop solutions and policies.
  • Updates and Interprets the Institute’s policies and procedures.
  • Drives the oversight of the performance management process, including but not limited to, coordination of performance reviews and timely completion.
  • Participates in the development and monitoring of employee training to ensure successful completion and tracking of objectives.
  • Coordinates the offboarding process, including completion of necessary documentation, notification of appropriate personnel, and exit interviews.
Education And/or Experience
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience resolving complex employee relations issues.
  • Working knowledge of multiple human resources disciplines, including compensation practices, organizational development, employee relations, DEIB, performance management, and federal and state employment laws.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credential or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
Other Knowledge, Skills And/or Abilities
  • Proficient knowledge of employment laws, wage and hour laws, HR practices, and policies required.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent relationship management skills and a high level of emotional intelligence.
  • Experience presenting to large groups.
  • Ability to use critical thinking and creativity when responding to problems in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to handle confidential situations with a high degree of integrity.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Possess strong attention to detail, time management and organizational skills.
  • Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office with strong data analysis skills.
