Job Description:Position PurposeReporting to the Associate VP, Auxiliary Services, this onsite, position is responsible for managing the University's enterprise risk management efforts, serves as proactive partner to University students, faculty and staff in dynamically managing operational and insurable risk, provides leadership and strategic direction to the Risk Management Office and advises campus constituents on risk-management issues by overseeing the University's insurance program, implementing and overseeing safety and risk management programs and policies, assisting with the development and maintenance of emergency plans, and investigating and facilitating the timely resolution to compliance and risk-related incidents and accidents on campus. The Director is a campus leader who demonstrates initiative and is innovative in fulfilling the position’s roles and responsibilities.
Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesRisk
  • Manages the University's Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) process, staffs and works closely with the University’s’ ERM Committee, and, as required, engages with the Audit and Risk Oversight Committee of the Board of Trustees on the University’s ERM program.
  • Provide the vision, leadership, integrity, initiative, good judgment and energy needed to implement a risk management program that is comprehensive and innovative and considered a best practice in the industry
  • Serves as a resource for campus constituents seeking counsel on risk-related matters.
  • Chairs, serves on, and/or supports risk-related committees including the ERM Committee, the Crisis Abroad Response Team (CART), and others as appropriate.
  • Reports and aids in investigating all University accidents and claims.
  • Assists Human Resources with employee worker’s compensation claims.
  • Works with key campus partners in developing and coordinating initiatives in areas of on and off campus safety and emergency planning.
  • Develops, maintains, and oversees the implementation of risk management related policies and procedures. Ensures information on the University's risk management website is kept current.
  • Manages driver certification for all employee and student drivers on campus.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources on the implementation and oversight of risk management measures for University programs serving minors.
  • Assists with risk and safety components of major events on campus such as commencement, open-houses, move-in days, etc.
  • Monitors and improves the University’s process for educating and training employees about risk management and risk avoidance in collaboration with the Environment, Health and Safety Department, the Office of the General Counsel and the University’s insurance consultants
  • Coordinates with relevant departments to develop, implement, and update risk management risk reduction and safety awareness programs pertaining to occupational and general campus safety. Conducts training as necessary.
  • Working with the Office of the General Counsel, analyzes and reviews risk, insurance and indemnification provisions contained in University contracts.
  • Manage service provider relationships
  • Maintains awareness of legal, regulatory and competitive environments affecting the insurance industry and higher education.
  • Oversees and participates in the development, management and administration of the risk management and insurance budget; Prepares periodic updates, tracks actual versus budget expense for the risk management function.
  • Serves on the University’s International Travel Policy Advisory Committee and responds to travel emergency situations as needed.
  • Manages the Department of Motor Vehicles Pull Notice program and maintains a database of approved drivers. Oversee the University’s electric vehicle safety program.
  • Manages and supervises staff assigned to assist with the functions of the position.
  • Coordinates and tracks all University background checks.
Insurance
  • Collaborate with Jesuits West Insurance Group partners on all aspects of risk and insurance management and renewals for the insurance group
  • Provide the vision, leadership, integrity, initiative, good judgment and energy needed to manage a group insurance program that is comprehensive and innovative and considered a best practice in the industry.
  • With the assistance of outside consultants, manages and evaluates the University's insurance portfolio (excluding student health, employee health insurance and unemployment insurance).
  • Manage the delivery and receipt of certificates of insurance and endorsements for all contract arrangements.
  • Manage special insurance programs for participants in various camps and clinics on campus.
  • Identifies and analyzes risk exposures to procure appropriate and cost-effective insurance to protect the assets of the University.
  • Identifies gaps in insurance coverage and advise of remedies
  • Coordinates the preparation of insurance renewal submissions, including the gathering of pertinent data and completion of renewal applications.
  • Negotiates insurance policy terms and pricing and makes recommendations to senior University management for action. Ensures that insurance policies, including endorsements, are reviewed for completeness of coverage and technical language, providing assistance or advice on provisions that require clarification.
  • Manages service provider relationships (insurance broker, claims administrators, outside consultants, etc.)
  • Submits and manages insurance claims and expedites the process with the appropriate insurance carrier.
  • Manages and pays insurance claims that may fall within the University’s self insured retentions
  • Manages the delivery and receipt of certificates of insurance and endorsements for all contract arrangements. Manage special insurance programs for participants in various camps and clinics on campus.
  • Works closely with others in University administration and the Office of the General Counsel to file, track, supervise all claims management activity and strategize on claims handling and settlement.
  • Responds to all property and liability claims, including the timely notification to insurers.
  • Accompanies insurance companies on campus loss control survey visits and facilitates the responses to insurance company recommendations
E. QualificationsOther Duties as assigned
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in business, risk management or related field with coursework required or equivalent combination of education and experience plus 8-10 years of experience of special training and experience in the technical aspects of risk management and claims required; Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Advanced degree (JD, MBA) and professional designations (CPCU, ARM) are preferred.
  • Requires a good working knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations pertaining to all lines of property and liability insurance, workers compensation, business law and third party liability as well as those applicable to higher education.
  • Demonstrated leadership and initiative in managing an effective, innovative and successful risk management and compliance program.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage a wide range of constituents in risk management and compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially.
  • Proven strong organizational, management and communications skills.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining a computerized database information system.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Must be able to occasionally work outside of regular business hours as needed.
  • Must be able to work, full time, onsite on the SCU campus
