Landscape, Maintenance & Construction Laborer
Job Description:
Landscape, Maintenance & Construction Laborer will be responsible for:
  • Maintenance repairs to equipment, landscape structures, outdoor furniture and walkways.
  • Construction, building and maintaining gardens, the park and other outdoor landscapes.
  • Ensuring plant growth, cleaning outdoor facilities, and trimming overgrown hedges.
  • Performing basic maintenance on lawns, such as mowing, applying fertilizer, and pulling weeds & dead plants
  • Installing and maintaining landscapes, pruning trees or shrubs, and ensuring that vegetation is attractive, orderly, and safe.
  • Overseeing the construction of outdoor spaces and maintaining existing grounds.
  • Monitoring and use of equipment, ensuring staff observe safety guidelines and protocols.
  • Upholding the landscaping design and ensuring plant growth.
  • Trimming overgrown limbs, hedges, and leaves.
  • Planting new decorative bushes, flowers, plants, and shrubs.
Qualifications:
To perform the role of a Landscape, Maintenance & Construction Laborer position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Consistent job attendance is required.
  • Must be able to read, write, understand, and communicate job orders.
  • Landscaping, maintenance & construction experience required.
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License with a clean driving record is required to operate company vehicles or to work with certain machinery.
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of the Landscape, Maintenance & Construction Laborer job:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the individual is regularly required to stand for prolonged periods of time, use hands and fingers to grip, pinch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; repeat motions more than twice per minute, ability to maintain alertness and attentiveness up to 4 hours while working varying hours, ability to maintain concentration/focus (ability to interpret the work environment and make decisions on predetermined operating policies and procedures), ability to work in small or tight spaces, ability to taste and smell.
  • Ability to balance, reach, pull, push with hands and arms both below and overhead; ability to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, ability to work in an environment subject to vibrations.
  • Frequently walk for prolonged periods, talk, hear audible alarms and voice commands with background noise.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include: the ability to have close vision with or without corrective lens (clear vision at 20 inches or less), have distance vision with or without corrective lens (clear vision at 20 feet or more), have color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), have peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point), have depth perception (vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships), have the ability to adjust focus while in changing light conditions (e.g., sunshine to indoor or dark conditions), ability to work in varied light conditions including low or diminished lighting.
  • Ability to lift and/or push up to 45 pounds with control.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Landscaping, Maintenance & Construction Laborer: Occasionally required to climb ladders, ability to work at heights for prolonged periods of time including heights with or without railings or over open pits greater than 4 feet, lift up to 100 pounds with control, push up to 25 pounds with control, ability to work in an environment with flashing lights including strobe lamps.
  • Maintenance: Repairs to equipment, landscape structures, outdoor furniture and walkways.
Construction: Building and maintaining gardens, the park, and other outdoor landscapes
  • Annual Care: Install, remove, deadhead, and fertilize. This process includes repetitive loading, unloading, and transporting trays of annuals. Bed preparation requires digging and lifting shovels of soil, use of a wheelbarrow, and grading with rakes using force. Trays of annuals, sometimes over 15 pounds, are unloaded from nursery racks up to eight feet high. Unloading of debris into dumpsters requires overhead lifting.
  • Mowing: Policing area for debris, operating walk-behind mower, and operating 22 lb. blower for cleanup-blower is carried on the back requiring balance and strength. Also includes operation of stick edgers and weed eaters for detail trimming requiring controlled outstretched movements for extended periods.
  • Shrub Pruning: Operating hand or power equipment to selectively cut plant material at varying heights, followed by a cleanup of debris. Debris bags are also loaded, transported, and unloaded into a dumpster by lifting weight overhead.
  • Mulching: Loading, unloading, and spreading mulch in plant beds. Controlled movement of a loaded wheelbarrow is required, lifting, shoveling, or forking old mulch well overhead into dumpsters.
  • Raking and Sweeping: Using hand rake to forcefully pull, push, gather and lift debris.
  • Weeding: Manually pull weeds from planting beds requiring repetitive stooping and bending, kneeling, and reaching. Debris loaded and transported in bags, unloaded into dumpster by lifting overhead.
  • Sod Work: Remove sod, prepare planting area, and install sod using force with shovel, transfer pieces for disposal. Base is often prepared with manual addition of sand by shovels. Carrying and stacking requires strength and overhead lifting.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Cleaning, preserving finishes, checking fluid levels, lubricating. Ability to physically lift and carry gasoline and grease in 5-gallon commercial containers is required. Repetitive force is needed for correct operation of grease guns and other methods of lubrication. Protecting equipment finishes involves repetitive circular motions with pressure.
  • Plant Replacement: Digging and removing plants and installing new plants requires substantial repetitive use of shovels and spades, regularly lifting above the head. Containerized plant material is manually carried into new planting areas and larger material transported on dolly or cart must be lifted and placed with control.
  • Watering: Connecting and dragging water hoses for hand watering requires forceful control and lifting weighted hoses and watering cans, using outstretched arm movements for extended periods of time.
The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those individual encounters while performing the essential functions of the Landscape, Maintenance & Construction:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the individual is regularly exposed to work in wet, humid conditions; work in outdoor weather conditions to include direct sunlight, heat or cold.
  • The individual is frequently exposed to work in extreme heat and cold (non-weather).
  • The individual is frequently exposed to working with oils and fuels and must be able to work around loud noise (noise when raised conversation is needed).
  • The individual is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, aerosols (spray paints and brake cleaner), hazardous chemicals, fluorescent lamps or batteries; be exposed to bodily fluids (blood, vomit).
  • The individual is occasionally required to excavate more than 4 feet and transport fuels, compressed gasses, and hazardous waste.
