POSITION SPECIFICS

Title: Trauma Program Coordinator (Hybrid)

FTE: Full time (1.0 FTE)

Schedule: Primary M – Friday between 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

POSITION SUMMARY

The Trauma Program Coordinator responsible for the development, implementation, operation, and evaluation of the Trauma Program. The Trauma Program Coordinator is considered a technical expert in the trauma field and responsible for the oversight of a highly complex patient population and program. This position is responsible for the organization of services and systems necessary for a multidisciplinary approach to providing care to injured patients both independently and in collaboration with the Trauma Program Medical Director, ED Director, and multidisciplinary health care team and management staff. Activities associated with this role have an organization, local, regional, state, and national impact. This involves coordinating all trauma-related services, clinical, education (in-house and public), performance improvement, research, injury prevention, EMS education, and trauma registry to ensure compliance with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and/or Department of Health Services for the State of Wisconsin.

POSITION TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Administration:

  1. Responsible for the day-to-day activities of the organizational-wide, level 3 trauma program.
  2. Manage the operational and regulatory aspects of the trauma program.
  3. Serve as a liaison to Administration, ED Director, and Trauma Medical Director, representing the Trauma program on various hospital committees to enhance and foster optimal patient care, as well as support current strategic priorities.
  4. Develop, implement, review, and revise trauma program plans, guidelines, policies, protocols, and standards of care in collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director, including the Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Program process and quality indicators.
  5. Manage the trauma program registry including extraction of data, entry into software utilized by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), and trending of data.
  6. Supervise adherence to hospital policies and procedures and standards through observation, medical record review, staff feedback and other appropriate sources.
  7. Participate in the regional and state trauma care activities and committee meetings to enhance and foster optimal trauma care management.
  8. Coordinate and participate in regional and hospital disaster management plans and exercises.
  9. Coordinate preparation for statewide trauma system designation site visit.
  10. Work with a broad array of departments to resolve inefficiencies and reduce costs.

Clinical Activities:

  1. Coordinate management across the continuum of trauma care, which includes the planning and implementation of clinical protocols and practice management guidelines ensuring the provision of efficient, quality, cost-effective care.
  2. Monitor and evaluates trauma activation process and care compliance with protocols to determine quality care, educational needs and/or performance improvement needs.
  3. Serve as a resource for the hospital staff regarding trauma care issues.
  4. Function as a liaison to multidisciplinary staff (pre-hospital, nursing, case managers, physicians, hospital quality department, Department Directors, Supervisors, Managers, and all ancillary departments).

Quality, Safety and Performance Improvement:

  1. Monitor clinical processes and outcomes and system issues related to the quality of care provided.
  2. Develop and foster collaborative relationships with all departments to facilitate and support quality trauma care.
  3. Supervise the collection, coding, scoring, and developing of processes for validation of data entered into the registry.
  4. Develop quality filters, audits, and case reviews.
  5. Monitor state and national trends in trauma care.
  6. Coordinate Trauma Committee case reviews.
  7. Demonstrate a continuous process of monitoring, assessing, and managing items that directly improve patient care.
  8. Monitor and trend all quality measures pursuant to DHS-118.
  9. Utilizes trauma registry data to support process improvement and patient safety outcomes and initiatives.
  10. Serve as the coordinator for identification, investigation, reporting and follow up of incidents and quality issues throughout the program while maintaining confidentiality.
  11. Oversight and coordination of site visits and pre-review questionnaire documentation.

Education and Community Outreach

  1. Direct, monitor, and provide education to intra-facility professional staff members regarding trauma and emergency preparedness.
  2. Direct, monitor, and participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of trauma injury prevention program, including attending hospital committee meetings and community meetings related to trauma education, trauma outreach, and injury prevention and ensure injury prevention needs assessment is performed from trauma registry data.
  3. Participate in the development of trauma care systems at all levels including by participating in both regional and state trauma advisory council meetings and engaging in public and professional education.
  4. Participate in professional organizations in areas applicable to trauma and emergency preparedness.
  5. Acts as the EMS liaison for the organization and maintains professional relationships with EMS services and individual field providers to foster supportive relationships and interactions.
  6. Review of EMS and emergency department documentation to identify trends and opportunities for improvements as well as provide education to pre-hospital providers.
  7. Participate in the training of prehospital care providers, the development and improvement of prehospital care protocols and the prehospital PIPS program.
  8. Plan, coordinate, deliver and evaluate education to local EMS agencies.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Required: Associate’s degree in nursing. Within one year of employment: Completion of American Trauma Society’s two-day trauma registry course or equivalent provided by a State trauma program and completion of the Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine’s Abbreviated Injury Scale and Injury scoring: Uses and Techniques course.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Experience:

  • Required: Three (3) years clinical experience in trauma and/or emergency care.
  • Preferred: Three (3) years of relevant trauma program nursing / patient care, and/or leadership experience in addition to the required experience noted above.

Licenses and Registrations:

  • Required: Current license as a RN in the State of Wisconsin.
  • Preferred: None

Certification(s):

  • Required: Completion of Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) and Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) within 1 year of appointment.
  • Preferred: Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN).
