Sault Tribe is Hiring a Govt. IT(SSM) - Cabling Technician Open Until Filled Near Sault Ste. Marie, MI

The Cabling Technician, under the direction of the Communications Manager, is responsible for installation and maintenance of all low voltage cabling systems for voice, data, network, security, camera (not gaming cameras), and door access systems across tribal government, gaming & hospitality, health and enterprises. This includes working closely with the Network team on cable design, labeling and connectivity to data center equipment. Regular travel to tribal facilities and enterprises across the tribe's seven county service area is required. Creates and maintains clear as-built documentation of cabling designs and installations. Supports employees and customers directly to provide timely and professional service to troubleshoot and solve cable or connectivity issues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

Low Voltage Cabling Infrastructure:

  • Install, maintain, and repair all low voltage cabling infrastructure across multiple sites, including voice, data, network, security, camera, and door access systems.
  • Recommend and purchase cabling, installation materials and supplies, following the IT purchasing process and approval process, to provide timely service for installations.
  • Utilize various cabling types like CAT5, CAT6, fiber optic, and other low voltage cables based on specific needs.
  • Ensure professional installation practices, following industry standards and best practices for cable routing, terminations, and labeling.
  • Perform cable testing using appropriate tools to verify cable integrity and functionality.
  • Install and maintain wall jacks and ports for network connectivity throughout all locations.
  • Maintains and secures all of the organization's tools and equipment provided and used to perform job duties.

External Copper and Fiber Infrastructure:

  • Monitor the condition of external copper or fiber optic connections between sites, identifying potential issues and reporting them promptly.
  • Participate in preventative maintenance activities for external cable infrastructure to ensure reliable connectivity.

Collaboration & Project Management:

  • Participate in the design process for new low voltage cabling infrastructure projects, providing technical insight and recommendations.
  • Work effectively with other IT staff (Voice Communication Specialist, Communications Administrator, A/V Specialist) and external contractors to ensure smooth installation and integration of cabling systems with other communication components.
  • Adapt and adjust work schedules to accommodate other trades and project timelines efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of cabling infrastructure layouts, cable types, and port assignments for future reference.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to established safety regulations and procedures for working with low voltage cabling and electrical equipment.
  • Will place and provide initial configuration of endpoint equipment when practical (phones, cameras, computer, A/V device, etc.).
  • Under the direction of the IT Communications Manager, maintain an inventory of cabling supplies and tools.
  • Continuously learn about new cabling technologies and best practices to maintain expertise.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring proper handling and storage of cabling materials and tools.
  • Report any equipment damage or malfunctions to the IT Communications Manager promptly.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position heavy with dual lifting of 100 pounds maximum and frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of color vision, typing; frequent standing, walking, sitting, reaching, use of hearing, driving, bending; occasional pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, manual handling, use of smell, near/midrange/far vision and field of vision. Working conditions include occasional exposure to weather, wet/humidity, noise and air quality. Potential hazards include constant computer use and occasional exposure to electric shock, high exposed places, chemicals and equipment.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. 

Experience: One year of experience in low voltage cable installation and maintenance required.

Certification/License: Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must undergo a Criminal background investigation done under the rules of the National Indian Gaming Commission. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

Knowledge:

  • Low Voltage Cabling Systems: In-depth knowledge of low voltage cabling standards and best practices for voice, data, network, security, camera, and door access systems.
  • Cable Types & Applications: Understanding of different low voltage cable types (CAT5, CAT6, Fiber Optic, etc.) and their appropriate applications.
  • Cable Terminations & Testing: Knowledge of proper cable termination techniques (punch-down, crimping, etc.) and proficiency using cable testing equipment.
  • Network Infrastructure: Basic understanding of network infrastructure concepts and how cabling systems support network connectivity.
  • Safety Regulations: Familiarity with safety regulations regarding low voltage cabling installations and electrical environments.

Skills:

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in installing, maintaining, and repairing all types of low voltage cabling infrastructure.
  • Cable Handling & Termination: Strong skills in cable handling, stripping, terminating (punch-down, crimping), and labeling cables according to industry standards.
  • Cable Testing & Troubleshooting: Ability to perform cable continuity and functionality tests using relevant tools and troubleshoot basic connectivity issues.
  • Project Management: Skills for planning and executing cabling installations, working within project timelines and collaborating with other trades.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with the IT Communications team (Voice Specialist, Communications Administrator, A/V Specialist) and external contractors.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous focus on ensuring professional installation practices, accurate labeling, and organized cable management.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong ability to identify and resolve basic cabling issues independently and escalate complex problems appropriately.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adjust work schedules to accommodate other trades and project timelines efficiently.

Abilities:

  • Physical Ability: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting cable reels, climbing ladders, and working in various environments (offices, ceilings, crawl spaces).
  • Manual Dexterity: Good manual dexterity for precise cable handling, stripping, and termination.
  • Safety Awareness: Strong commitment to safety by following regulations and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Teamwork: Collaborative spirit to work effectively within the IT department and with external vendors to ensure seamless cabling infrastructure implementation.
  • Learn & Adapt: Willingness to learn about new cabling technologies, standards, and best practices to maintain expertise.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and complete cabling projects within designated deadlines.
