Savannah Chatham County Public School System is Hiring a Teacher Specialist for PreK-12 Health & Physical Education Near Savannah, GA

PRIMARY FUNCTION: This position is responsible for specialized assistance to schools (PreK-12) in the areas of health and physical education for the purpose of meeting district goals. Emphasis is placed on the development of curriculum tools and demonstration of research-based, effective instructional practices in the content areas. This position will work with district staff on the development of the district's short, medium, and long-term Health and Physical Education goals. Using state and local policies and practices, this position will lead the development of curriculum resources and continuous staff professional development for the implementation of highly effective Health and Physical Education. This position will monitor strategic goals and implementation of strategies toward overall Health and Physical Education in grades PreK-12.

REPORTS TO: Director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction and Director of Secondary Curriculum & Instruction

SALARY SCHEDULE: Teacher

WORK DAYS: 229

REQUIREMENTS:

Educational Level: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university

Preferred: Higher degree in Health and Physical Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Teaching and Learning, and/or Educational Leadership

Experience, Skill and Certification:

  • Must have clear-renewable certification in Health and Physical Education.
  • At least five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience in PreK-12 Health and Physical Education
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and teacher training.
  • Successful recent/current experience in leadership activities.
  • Successful experience planning and delivering professional development.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and writing skills.
  • Excellent planning, organization, and management skills
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred:

  • At least two (2) years of Academic Coach or teacher leader/master teacher experience
  • Experience with grant writing and grant implementation.
  • Teacher Support Specialist endorsement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Provides district level leadership for the overall program and develops strategic short-and long-range plans based on district and state priorities.
  2. Sets and clearly articulates high expectations for instruction by all teachers and learning by every student.
  3. Provides coordination and leadership in the development of a comprehensive PK-12 Health and Physical Education Curriculum.
  4. Develops and implements a PreK-12 coherent, developmentally appropriate, Health and Physical Education curriculum that integrates the four core content areas (ELA, math, science, and social studies) into the Health and Physical Education curriculum.
  5. Coordinates the selection of instructional materials, supplies, textbooks, technology, and equipment needed to support the implementation of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum.
  6. Coordinates District-wide committee for the selection and recommendation of sex education materials for approval by the Board of Education.
  7. In collaboration with Curriculum Directors, develops and manages an annual budget relating to the comprehensive Health and Physical Education program.
  8. Coordinates and provides high quality professional learning that is designed to ensure that teachers continue to develop skills and knowledge in Health and Physical Education content and instructional strategies.
  9. Assists school leadership in hiring qualified Health & Physical Education teachers.
  10. Assists school leadership as needed in developing the master schedule as it relates to Health & Physical Education classes.
  11. Writes, implements, and manages grants/programs related to the Health, Physical Education, safety, and well-being of students.
  12. Conducts non-evaluation classroom observations and provides Health & Physical Education teachers with relevant feedback regarding their instructional practices.
  13. Oversees the District’s student physical performance assessments and reporting requirements (i.e., Fitnessgram), assists with the development of assessments as needed, and utilizes assessment results to improve instruction and programming.
  14. Supports the ongoing use of health or wellness task forces to help develop district policies and guidelines.
  15. Ensures the District is within compliance with district, state, and federal policies, mandates, and regulatory requirements.
  16. Develops, implements, provides training and maintains records on Safe & Drug-Free Schools.
  17. Solicits support from parents, community agencies, and university staff for assistance in implementing effective Health & Physical Education programs.
  18. Assists the Director of Athletics in promoting wellness and safe school programs.

Terms of Employment

Incumbents will receive an annual contract. The work calendar will be 229 days. Salary will be determined based on level of certification and allowable experience.
