Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools is Hiring a Transportation Alternative Vehicle Driver Near Savannah, GA

PRIMARY FUNCTION:This position is responsible for transporting students to and from assigned education centers using alternative vehicles to include, but not limited to Type A school buses, approved maximum capacity 8 passenger vehicles; controls passenger behavior and maintains safe operation of the assigned vehicle.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Education Level:High School Diploma or equivalent
  1. Experience, Skill, and Certification:
  • Valid Georgia Driver License; required to have held a valid driver's license for a minimum of the 5 previous years.
  • Ability to lift equipment and/or student weighing 40 pounds.
  • Written and oral communication
  • Pre-employment and annual physical examination; must successfully complete Bus Driver Training Program provided by Savannah Chatahm County Public School Transportation Department
Preferred: Previous pupil transportation experience
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance; work hours may vary during the school year.
  2. Contacts dispatch during timeframe published in the Driver's Handbook to report same day absences.
  3. Drives designated route according to stop schedule and transport students to and from school.
  4. In the absence of the assigned driver, the Alternative Vehicle Driver will drive uncovered routes when needed.
  5. Operate additional runs (combined routes, double/triple back runs, split routes, etc.
  6. Cover Tutorial, CBI/CBVI, and similar trips.
  7. Must be readily available to cover various routes as needed.
  8. Performs pre-trip inspection of vehicle as required by department regulations and post-trip inspection.
  9. Fuels assigned vehicle as needed and records data in auto-fueling system.
  10. Delivers vehicle to Fleet Maintenance shop as directed by pre-
    arranged schedule and as needed.
  11. Submits all reports and corrective time sheets in a timely manner as required by Transportation department.
  12. Attends required training meetings, Orientation, State Safety meetings, and all other meetings as requested.
  13. Operates alternative vehicle in accordance with the laws of Georgia and in accordance with the policies prescribed by the Savannah Chatham County Public School District under all types of weather conditions including, but not limited to, sun, fog, rain, sleet, hail, snow, and ice.
  14. Operates alternative vehicle without receiving a traffic violation or warning citation from state or local law enforcement.
  15. Operates the alternative vehicle without any preventable accidents as determined by Risk Management during the evaluation period.
  16. Operates alternative vehicles of various sizes, capacities and complexities to cover designated routes in accordance with established times.
  17. Maintains external and internal cleanliness of the vehicle as required for safe comfortable operation.
  18. Monitors/operates communication devices for essential and emergency transmissions only.
  19. Conducts emergency evacuation drills as required and assist with verifications.
  20. Reports delays, accidents, and unusual situations to the Transportation Department.
  21. Maintains cordial relations with parents, administrators, other employees, and the general public.
  22. Collect and distribute confidential and non-confidential documents and material.
  23. Maintains student discipline in the alternative vehicle and refers serious infractions to appropriate administrator using District approved process.
  24. Collects, maintains, and periodically updates emergency information and is aware of students' medical needs reported by parents/guardian/school staff.
  25. Presents professional appearance.
  26. Operates wheelchair lift and performs necessary securement for wheelchairs and seat security devises for students.
  27. Shall carry out other such duties, whether specifically listed above or not, as are assigned or required by the employee's supervisor or other appropriate school personnel, law, board policy, administrative regulation, department handbook, as are reasonably necessary for the efficient operation of the department and district.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Incumbents will be considered "at will." This position is "essential personnel, critical staff" when there is an event that creates security challenges or disruptions to district operations. This position may be required to work during identified periods of an emergency as defined in Policy Regulation GBRB-R, Title: Professional Personnel Time Schedules. Appropriate pay will be determined based on Grade 7 and allowable experience as determined by Human Resources. This is a 198-workday non-exempt position.
